Good Morning Base Campers!
Today LTDAkiles saw three Base Campers wrap up their gear and move to other pursuits: ![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you ever so much for contributing to this great trek, gentlemen ![]() For no particular reason - I think - - except for it being a beautiful declaration of love I decided to play Close to You The start of Giro d'Italia will be hosted in Denmark on May 5-7th 2012, and we had a visit from the Italian sports press yesterday. The route was filmed, and in January we should be able to watch that on a website: ![]() - last year's winner: Alberto Contador |

Good Morning Base Campers!
All is quiet at the Finnish Front. Noone left - if somebody came it would be a surprise. All is quiet at the Base Camp Forum Front as well. Gossip: Mike047 lost electricity this morning. I hope it is back, Mike047. Guitar Man is cruising the Caribbian Sea - he will stay with our host captain for the duration - the charge for using the "Ruby Princess"'s Internet is prohibitive - I would call it highway robbery, but as he is at sea at that particular place - I'll go for Piracy I'll attempt to be quiet also for a change The Last Concert ![]() |

Ha! So much for my silence
![]() Actually, the term 'walkabout' was invented while I was hibernating. I noticed RAMMIE using it when telling that Mike047 was the one who taught him 'walkabout' Would you, please, explain it to me? Your current team, nanoprobe - I saw you joining ![]() ![]() |

Watching the movie Crocodile Dundee will explain it all. I had no idea it was that complicated ![]() ![]() Walkabout refers to a rite of passage during which male Australian Aborigines would undergo a journey during adolescence and live in the wilderness for a period as long as six months. In this practice they would trace the paths, or "songlines", that their people's ceremonials ancestors took, and imitate, in a fashion, their heroic deeds. Merriam-Webster, however, defines the noun as a 1908 coinage that refers primarily to "a short period of wandering bush life engaged in by an Australian aborigine as an occasional interruption of regular work", with the only mention of "spiritual journey" coming in a usage example from a latter-day travel writer. To white employers, this urge to depart without notice (and reappear just as suddenly) was seen as something inherent in the aboriginal nature, but the reasons may be more mundane: workers who wanted or needed to attend a ceremony or visit relatives did not accept employers' control over such matters (especially since permission was generally hard to get). |
