Re: Some website feedback

Market-speak isn't really very effective.

that's funny

It wouldn't be Market Speak for long if it wasn't effective

We are trying to sell an idea here, a concept that is working.

I'll say again this is not a technological project it's a people project - about people for people.

Now who apart from me and a few former CA's has the World Community Grid T-Shirt?

Why is the Spread the Word campaign still a POC on my Webserver? 6512 Click throughs to the WCG website with no inclusion in the IBM stats is not bad going and countless thousands of still still copyrighted logo's have appeared on many a blog around the globe as a result (Thanks to all those who have signed up along the way).

Stupid of me really but I thought I would check the IBM site for News of our progress and our 3rd Anniversary is, as expected, not on there

It's been like that since we completed our first millennium in our first month. Nothing has changed.

IBM don't know a good thing when they are sitting on one

Dave

Re: Some website feedback

Have a look at the partner list, David. Lots of corporations and institutions are involved. Not that there couldn't be a lot more, of course! Hopefully BOINC will help with that.

It's not surprising that people low down the food chain fail to make a good case for WCG. WCG combat this by talking to the top. When the executives are persuaded, the security people and IT staff will just have to work out how to install it and set up their firewall suitably. It isn't hard - WCG provide all the help they need.

We're persuading people to volunteer, not selling cornflakes. People need cornflakes - they don't need to volunteer. A different approach is needed.

Besides, market-speak has never played well on websites. Too much intrusive advertising - web users are pretty much immune to the standard garbage.

The thing is, saving the world just isn't glamorous. Much as I would love to, I can't see how we can create an iPhone scale buzz about World Community Grid.

Open for ideas, though!

Perhaps the rest are under the same misaprehension as my collegue, that WCG required you to change the way you use your computers.

I can imagine that corporations wouldn't be to quick to join if they thought they had to change their PC power on policy, or change the way their users worked.

So even less reason why they might be prepared to sit down and trawl through loads of text to find ... what? Information they don't know they need to find. Why bother?!

Unwanted or irrelevant pop-ups , etc, I'd agree with you. But that's not what were talking about. We're just talking about making the relevant information clearly visible, without a visitor having to site down and study the site as if they were doing a PhD.

The thing is, saving the world just isn't glamorous. Much as I would love to, I can't see how we can create an iPhone scale buzz about World Community Grid

I fail to see why it's not. An opportunity for individuals to participate in a project the size of WCG, a project that could make the difference to the lives of millions of people around the globe. That could tackle head on the 'frightening' affects of global warming, that could help lead to a cure for a disease that affects 1 in 3 people in britain at some point during their lifetime....

Are you really telling me that people couldn't be made enthusiastic about this on a big scale.... really telling that you believe that!!!!

Re: Some website feedback

maybe so but we are not seeing exponential growth that should result as even more people tell even more people

They might be partnering (who wouldn't want to ) but we don't see a step change in the stats when they do. This is probably because not very many PC's get signed up as a result - the most likely reason being IT security concerns

It's not surprising that people low down the food chain fail to make a good case for WCG
LOL

Could you give any example of 1000+ PC's being added as a result by any major corporation? (Excluding IBM)

I think the clue is in the future tense "will"

Re: Some website feedback

Cheers

I thought I would have a look where we stood on Google if you search the term "Cancer Research"

let's just say the defunct Grid.org do better than we do. Today we languish on page 19

That's a project with all the backing of IBM's IT savvy and we are on page 19 of Google based on the contents of that front page

So plainly even Google can't work out what we are all about

Not even a google adword placement anywhere in sight
