When I found out that there is a new Cancer project, I changed my prefs, and then downloaded and installed the BOINClient on my old WinXP AthlonXP PC. (I've been BOINCing on my new Ubuntu Core2duo PC since I put it together a few months ago, and I just noticed some new X* task names there this evening, and followed up on that).
----------------------------------------During the WinXP BOINC installation, I picked the ScreenSaver option, thinking I could always turn it off later. I'm not that thrilled with the ScreenSaver, and it probably takes a bit of CPU power that could be fighting cancer. I looked at the BOINC manager options (and searched these fora), and couldn't find out how to disable the BOINC ScreenSaver. Is it as easy as going in to Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver and turning it off? If I do that, can I be sure it won't disrupt my BOINCage? Thanks. |

Thanks, Dataman.
----------------------------------------Dang it, I can't see your sig on my Win box - my hosts file from Mike Burgess at MVPs.org is "blocking" dcstat.com. Adblock+ doesn't block it in Ubuntu. Anyway, I'm also not too impressed with the graphics from the "Simple View" of the BOINC Manager (to use the Ubuntu terminology). The UD graphics on the old grid.org Cancer project were cooler. |

You are welcome. The graphics serve a purpose, I guess, for those who need them for corporate installations or just like "eye candy". Otherwise, they just consume CPU cycles. I just thought of another point; as I mentioned
----------------------------------------(I've been BOINCing on my new Ubuntu Core2duo PC since I put it together a few months ago, and I just noticed some new X* task names there this evening, and followed up on that). When I went to the "My Projects" prefs, I only had "Human Proteome Folding 2" selected (and the "If there is no work ... for the projects I have selected ... send me work from another"). How did I start getting the new cancer project's tasks? Did WCG "remember" that I had worked on the old cancer project? |

Nope, WCG add new projects to all member profiles unless the project is considered so demanding that it's a manual opt-in like AC@H currently is.
----------------------------------------It's a slight deviation where in past that was only done if the "My Projects" page was having 'All Projects' ticked, but at some point what happened was that projects finished and many clients went into set/forget pause mode. With BOINC and the 'Give me other work if my preferred project(s) has none' option on, think it a bit of a contradiction, so we'll surely touch base in the back-room on the next release, whenever that comes. Don't even know if those auto-population capacities permit this level of filtering before applying (thought so).

Thanks, Sekerob, that's "interesting".
----------------------------------------I'm very happy, since fighting cancer is my preference, but to impose a new project on people that have only selected one, without notice, and without the new project even showing as selected on their "My Projects", might generate some rancor. Someone else may want to only fight AIDS, might not check their project's status for a few weeks, and then find out that their PC has been doing other, non-AIDS tasks when then only wanted other tasks "If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected". |

Hello goedel,
The best Screensaver option is 'blank' rather than 'none'. At least - - that's my opinion. Sekerob gave a good explanation about projects. With projects constantly finishing and being started, the only practical 'set and forget' option is automatic enrollment in new projects. Anybody who wants particular projects can always select just the ones that are wanted (and [best practice] set the option to run anything if nothing desired is available). Lawrence |

Thanks for the response, Lawrence.
----------------------------------------The best Screensaver option is 'blank' rather than 'none'. At least - - that's my opinion. And mine as well. So it blanks out a little earlier then the power-saver options would. . . . the only practical 'set and forget' option is automatic enrollment in new projects. Perhaps another check-box for people to specify their preferences regarding new projects? |
