Hello!
I'm new to grid processing and WCG. I have four machines running WCG. Three of my machines regularly download and complete tasks, but one has no task assigned to it, and no matter how many times I hit update no new tasks get downloaded. I think the machine I'm having problems with downloaded and completed one task but hasn't received anything since. It's a slower machine (processor only 498mhz) and I thought I had figured out the problem because it only had 0.14 GB of free space. I freed up about 9 GBs but I'm still not receiving new tasks. Any ideas on what this could be? Is there any other information I could provide to help troubleshoot this? |

Hmm, it appears this machine has only 64MB of RAM !
! So I suppose I can't expect it to run eh? ![]() |

From an energy use versus productivity perspective I'd not recommend to use that machine for 24/7 crunching. If it's an actually used computer e.g. for word-processing or internet browsing, for little money a 256mb strip can be bought, if it fits and can still be had with the correct specs. Than, just running in background when on, it would be okay. It's your choice eventually.

Ok, thanks for the advice!
Out of curiosity, if the RAM is only 64MBs, is it possible to obtain and run tasks from WCG? That is, is the reason I'm not receiving tasks related to something other than the RAM? |

Yes, spot on. The absolute bare minimum is having 128mb free RAM but WCG set at its System requirement page 250mb RAM as a reasonable bottom line for 'used' machines.
----------------------------------------128mb RAM will require lots of swapfile and disk space to compensate. It would run slow also v.v. the 496 mhz CPU and impair use as there will be with larger models lots of ram to disk swapping. Even outside WCG there are very few grid projects that make do with just 64mb. Don't know what operating system, but Windows 98 / Windows ME is starting to get less and less support.

on a few of my pc,s that dont have much memmory i enlarge the swapfile but make sure u have the space....its slow but it works..
can u get a little more memmory? if u dont use the pc for anything else its not any prob, i use a naked install of win2kpro or xppro and thats it disable all unwanted startup progs and kill any unneeded services... |

Hmm, it appears this machine has only 64MB of RAM ! ! So I suppose I can't expect it to run eh? ![]() Even if you succeed in making such a "small" machine crunch some WU by means of some clever parameter setting there is a very strong probability that the job will not be completed within the deadlines (slow processor + enormous swapping, plus slower old disk units eventually). Not forgetting the very poor work/energy ratio as mentioned earlier. Cheers. Jean. |
