Boinc and Linux client

I'm running the Boinc client on a notebook (1300Mhz CPU, 256MB RAM) with Ubuntu linux 7.10. I've been running the client for a few days but I don't know if I'm doing everything correct. I have two main problems
1) How to start the client? I always do it by the command boinc -attach_project ..... Is this the correct way? Every time the client seems to start correctly and it keeps showing me: " Restarting task faah2530_ZINC03954011_xmd03360_01_0 using faah version 542". This leads to the second question

2) How long does it take normally to finish a work unit for the Anti Aids project? Since now that message is the only one I received and my statistics are constantly to zero.. I can estimate at least 12 hours of actual work. Is it normal?

Thanks

Vittorio

Re: Boinc and Linux client

Ciao Vittorio,

On a 2.5 ghz P4 the FA@H jobs take non-stop about 8-10 CPU hours, so on a 1.3ghz it is likely near 15-20 hours. It varies.

If you check the process manager see if the wcg_faah_autodock_5.42_xxxxxx process gets enough CPU cycles. It should get like 90% plus.

The 'restart' message is fine after interruption. If you can start BOINCmanager and visit the Tasks tab, you can see how far the job has progressed. If the science ran long enough it will restart at the last checkpoint saved.

a dopo

Re: Boinc and Linux client

Thanks a lot for your answer. But I have a new question. You wrote about the BOINCmanager... what it is?? Till now I could only see something running in my terminal, nothing with a GUI or something like that.. Is there a GUI for the BOINC where i can easily see the progresses...
Ahaha, I promise that I will stop asking such dumb questions asap :P

Ciao!

Re: Boinc and Linux client

Another thing. With 'top' I can see that the wcg_faah_autodo takes only 50-60% of the CPU load. Why a so low value? When I checked that there was only rithmbox running..

Yes there is and the program in windows is called BOINCmgr.exe. Most people start the client with launching the BOINCmgr, but you can start and exit it afterwards if you prefer for it not to occupy memory when not in use.

Ok, now everything is working fine, except for the CPU occupation that is far from 99%. I'm running the client on linux and that's why I didn't expect a GUI. Anyway i found the launcher boincmgr in the BOINC folder and the graphical version of the client started. I'm doing some tests to see wheter the GUI slows down the computation, but I won't lose much time on this.
Thank you again.

Re: Boinc and Linux client

Hello squalho,
If you sign in to My Grid - Device Manager and click on your Selected Profile, you can see whether or not you have selected Maximum Output. If you have not, then you are probably running on 60% throttle (use the CPU for 3 seconds, then idle for 2 seconds). The default is set to 60% to keep laptops from overheating, since many people are unfamiliar with computers and do not know how to check their CPU temperature.

If you change your profile, select SAVE to store the new value.

Re: Boinc and Linux client

One other thing you might want to consider for a laptop is running it at a lower speed. I have a 1.2MHz P3 laptop which, if run heavily at top speed, will be quite hot, even with the fan howling constantly. Intel processors from about that time have lower speed(s) which can be selected. The only other speed for mine is 800MHz, which it'll do flat out while rarely running the fan. If you happen to want to throttle down the CPU to keep it cool, better to do it this way. A 1.2MHz P3 run 60% of the time will use more power and produce more heat and fan noise than if it's run at 800MHz at 100% load ... and do less work.

Great advice, Kremmen! Wish I had thought of that.

Yes, thank you. In fact I don't know if my processor can scale down its speed (i'm actually using a borrowed laptop), and I neither know wheter Ubuntu can support the speed change. In any case thank you for the advice, I will keep it running at 60% cos it doesn't seem to get too hot.
Ciao
