confused BOINC just sits on Ready to Report
Hi,

I've been using BOINC for 3 days since I've upgraded from UD and i've got a question.

When my Tasks reach 100% and are ready to report, they just sit there forever, they are never reported, the only way BOINC continues with other tasks are if I go to the Projects and click Update, which forces BOINC to report.

Shouldn't it automatically report? this is keeping my pc idle all the time since it finishes one task and never starts another.

Is there a way to make it report as soon as a task finishes?

Hello zico,
When a work unit is finished, the result is sent back immediately. This is shown in the 'Messages' tab. But there is a complicated Scheduler process running on the server. The BOINC client does not immediately send an update datagram to the scheduler. Instead, it delays sending it for as long as your communication delay is set in your preferences. By default, this is 0.3 days (7.2 hours). When the update datagram is sent, the Scheduler process (I think that is the name) runs an update over the database, which is relatively time-consuming. The hopeful reason for this delay is that you will have completed another work unit in that time, so that the datagram will contain the scheduling update info for multiple results. This will cut down on the time spent updating the database. While waiting to send the datagram, the work unit is shown as 'Ready to Report'. The result has already been returned.

No, I do not really know why it is done this way. I have read an explanation of why it is so much better without understanding why the datagram can't be initiated by a process on the server. I just have to assume that the BOINC developers have a good reason for designing things this way even though I cannot understand their 'explanation'. raised eyebrow

The sequence you see is for:

-Tasks Tab to first show something like 'Result being uploaded' during which
-Transfer Tab to show an actual upload progress, after which
-Tasks Tab to show the "Ready To Report", and when clearing
-Tasks Tab to briefly show 'Acknowledgment' with a record showing in
-Message tab to say "reporting 1 tasks (in the plural even if only 1)

Very strange assuming WCG is the only project. ATM i can only think that your Activity menu, Network option is set to Suspended or a time limited schedule. Hitting the Update button forces the line to open for 5 minutes regardless. That is used to upload results, but not necessarily does the Ready to Report clearing. If the Server responds with "Diverting for 5:03 minutes", the line has closed again before part 2 could take place. That said, i think the automatics delay is now 2 minutes, so if you hit Update, all should take place, even when you set the network to suspended. BUT, if you have a slow line, it wont be able to upload and download new work in that 5 minute frame and it just sits there till the line is automatically or thru user action opened again.

I guess what you guys said makes sense.

I'm at IBM's network, so I don't think it has anything to do with speed (maybe it has who knows).

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on how things go from now on and if I see anything bizarre i'll let you guys know.

Normally BOINC continues with the next task as soon as the previous task has finished - before it is uploaded, let alone reported.

So, if you paste the last couple of days worth of messages from the messages tab, that will give us some insight into your problem.

well, as you requested, here are the last couple of days of activity:

my computer has a screensaver every 5 minutes, so I set BOINC to start working after 6 minutes.

i have to connect through a proxy, so sometimes the proxy is down and maybe that's why we see some proxy errors on the log.

You got the wrong order:

1. Let BOINC start crunching after X minutes idle e.g. 5 minutes
2. Let Screensaver start after X+1 minutes e.g. 6 minutes
3. Let energy saving modes kick in later but at least X+2 e.g. 15 minutes.

Without the crunching pre-started, the BOINC-Screensaver will not be able to hook into the running science.

The proxy issue is separate and if it's periodically down, that's what you would see.

okay, i changed it as you said.

now i'm seeing one issue regarding the proxy.

here at work we use a CISCO VPN client to connect to the proxy, when i leave the office and come in at the other day, the client is always disconnected, but only mine is, my co-workers clients are always working.

i saw the hour which it disconnected and it's like 15 minutes after i leave work, which means probaby BOINC is making it disconnect after some minutes, is there a setting i can adjust or something i can do so it stops disconnecting it?

hmmmm, there's just been e 5.10.23 beta released to take care of some proxy issues, not all: http://boincdl.ssl.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.10.23_windows_intelx86.exe

If colleague machines run fine and yours' not and you're on the identical release, compare the local preferences ('Advanced' Menu). Three settings come to mind, but if you're permanently connected, they should do nothing:

1. Confirm before connecting to internet
2. Disconnect when done

Clear the 2 tick-boxes and save

3. Set Activity menu to Always connected

I've got a rather unorthodox next move in mind, but let's see how this works out.... maybe other CA's or techs have alternate ideas.

When I said all my coworkers client are always connected I forgot to say that they do not use BOINC, as far as I know i'm the only one using BOINC here (that's why I said probably BOINC is disconnecting it).

Anyway, I installed the beta version you posted and changed the settings. lets see how it works out.

Could the 'Skip image file verification' setting help us on this? it's unchecked but i didn't try with it checked so far.
