The comments listed on the screen saver seem to support a point of view that the diseases being researched are caused by, or lack cures because of, hate.........which is preposterous. Not only were the 8th grade students given such an odd assignment, but someone had to select which ones to include and then incorporate them into the project. Disturbingly often these days the "hate" label is used as a political weapon applied to everything under the sun that differs from ones own sense of priorities or that approaches a problem from a different perspective. Information on the screen saver should be related to the science of studying/curing these diseases and not infused with innopropriate and irrelevant comments. Matters of opinion are what blogs are for.

There are already multiple threads on the topic, including:
----------------------------------------Why do the graphics for Dengue have to be so political? Which already has a response from WCG staff: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost?post=126380 [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 28, 2007 5:53:50 PM] |

My thread has to do with the student comments specifically, I have no issue with the rest of the graphics.

Hi KLC7,
----------------------------------------The students comments were the only wind-up AFAIK, hence one of the thread titles '... political'. At any rate the chief admin commented in the post linked above and amendments are under way to 'neutralize' the writings and enhance the actual graphics related to the science. cheers

Hello KLC7,
A research project scientist promised an 8th grade class that he would include their comments in the project. The promise was made (as far as I know) before he got their input. Apparently the class teacher asked for something other than Dengue Fever comments, so this left him in a bind since the students certainly expected to be able to see their comments on the graphics. From my point of view it seems a no-win situation but it does give us a war story to tell future project scientists about when they are planning their projects. Lawrence |

Thanks for the background info Lawrence. That explains a lot. I mean, I don't see anything wrong with the concept of having project related comments on the screen saver, perhaps things along the lines of how rewarding it is to get involved to find cures for the various diseases, but these really struck me as out of place.

I too had some issues with the student’s letters and the precedent they might set. Lawrence’s post says it all. But what is so great, and rather unique in the world of forums, is that the WCG actually listened to the voice of the user community and took appropriate action. It is not the first time that they have done so over the years. Thanks again! ![]() ![]() |
