In 1990 I was living in Herzlia, near "Silicone Wadi," where I bought a computer and printer in the Street of the Sandal-makers, joined the Computer Section of AACI (the Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel), at Netanya, and registered with Compuserve. Soon after, I helped found ESRA (English Speaking Residents' Association) Computer Club and appointed myself editor and leader writer of its journal. The Professor of Information Technology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was one of our members and founded our domain, which is still active.

Hi JP
----------------------------------------I started University in 1994 that was my first experience of the net. We had PCs at school, but they weren't connected to anything. Our first home PC we got a couple of years before that: It was a 386SX. It ran at 16Mhz, had a 40Mb Hard Drive and came with 1Mb of RAM. I remember my Dad really pushed the boat out and upgraded it to it's full capacity of 5Mb (bizarrely) at a cost of £50...per Mb!! Ah, memories of Windows 3.1! I wonder how long that machine would have taken to crunch through a Clean Energy Project WU? |

Prior to the internet I remember using a time share application with MECC(Minnesota Education Computing Consortium). It used a teletype terminal with a roll of yellow paper. Had a paper tape reader on the side for entry of BASIC programs. I think the computer was actually at the University of Minnesota. Early 1970's.
----------------------------------------First got onto the internet at a friends place. They showed me how to use FTP, telnet, gopher and other things which I forget. Everything was text based. No graphics I can remember. I am thinking this would be sometime in the mid to late 1980's. Compuserve was the king. Bulletin boards ruled. Eventually added a second phone line to the house. Was able to connect with a 56k modem at a whopping best of about 20k. Really crummy phone line. Had a lot of disconnects and retries. When wireless broadband became available, I jumped on that in a heartbeat. Onward to bigger and better things. Cheers

A long time ago, our CEO told me, that he heard about a new thing called Internet, and asked me to install it on his PC. Urgent, of course.
So the fun began: what the ... is Internet. I had to find out without blaming me. Can you remember how we found something out without the net? Well, a month (sweating) later it was done. His reaction: "Ah, this is Internet! Great! And what do i do now with that?" |
