Hi all,
----------------------------------------I was just wondering, because I recently switched to BOINC from UD... why does every HPF2-project WU take about twice the time to complete with BOIC compared to UD. Usually It took my PC about 1h 40min to crunch a WU of HPF2 on UD, now as I have switched to BOINC, it takes about 3h 30min to complete a WU of the same project. Are the WUs for BOINC and UD different? or is BOINC "slower" than UD, that is, less efficient? I had the UD on 100% throttle, and in BOINC it says 100%. Does anyone have a good answer on this, or a thought? ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

It may just be a coincidence. HPF2 does have some variation but they are GENERALLY the same. Boinc could have been running a packet of longer workunits. Over the long term they should average out.

Does anyone have a good answer on this, or a thought? WCG packs as i understand an X amount of work into a task so the overall BOINC side of the project generates an average of about 5-6 hours.... The UD agents were usually slower, so presume there to have been lesser attempts being inccluded in 1 WU, so that the slower machines would still complete in a reasonable time. Here a page of some supplemental graphs. One shows the averages per project per day per job. As you see WCG in fact packed a lot less to reduce the time averages starting late June '07. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=15583 PS, presume that the comparison is drawn on the BOINC agent running at same throttle percent as the ol UD Agent.

PS, presume that the comparison is drawn on the BOINC agent running at same throttle percent as the ol UD Agent. This is what I think is happening. BOINC and UD are running the same application (with different subroutines compiled into the application to allow for external control). So the only real difference in speed should be the throttle. Check your preferences to make sure that BOINC is set to run at 100% speed. Lawrence |

Wow, thanks for all replies.
----------------------------------------Iit says under "rescource" 100,00% (6th coloumn from left in the projekts tab). And in the activity handler I also see that the cpu usage is 100%... The manager has downloaded 3 WUs automatically. One is running and the others are waiting in line to start, and on them it says under "time until finished" 3h 32min. ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |

Dont believe the "time until finished" thing. I have recently switched from UD to BOINC. The UD client worked at HPF 2 project and it lasted maybe 40-46 hours one unit. I switched to the BOINC agent and when the agent starts, it shows "time until finished" 8-9 hours and "elapsed time" the time elapsed.
----------------------------------------But: 23.9.2007 12:01:20|World Community Grid|Starting task lh509_00009_5 using hpf2 version 518 The agent ran without break. It is 20:24 now and: Elapsed time: 2h 45 min 6s and 33%ˇof the project finished. What the heck? Does the BOINC agent count the run time by its own way? I did not stopped the agent, so the elapsed time should be something over eight hours. And no, I have not more WU, at least the agent shows only one WU. What the heck is with the run time? Does BOINC not understand two-digit hours run time? Does it think that everything should be finished in 9 hours 59 mins and if not, it is puzzled and does not count the run time right? Weird. |

It ia NOT elapsed time in Boinc as it was in UD...it is proper CPU time so elapsed time is much longer...

Weird. 20:24 wallclock hours and only 2:45 hours CPU time allocation? Smells like you got something running on the side that is stealing all the CPU time. Given that HPF2 does not like that at all: 1. Is Your UD Agent Off? 2. Is The BOINC CPU resource set to 100%? (Task mamanger should show a high CPU percent use for a WCGxxxxxxxxxx process. 3. Can you see in Taskmanager any other procees with hi percent use or is it going the Idle time process?

I uninstalled the UD agent while migrating to the BOINC agent. It was said so in the Migrate instructions, so I did it.
----------------------------------------In the WCG preferences I have set Maximum output, in the BOINC agent I had set maximum 90% of the processor time. I set it to 100% now. And in the Task Manager there is nothing using the processor aside of "wcg_hpf_rosetta...", which is the project, the Firefox and sometimes the antivirus. The "wcg_hpf_rosetta..." takes over 90% of processor time - should be so, I think. But if Scribe says the truth and the "elapsed time" in the manager is not really the elapsed time but the proper CPU time, then it might be. It is 3 hours 10 mins now :) |

What scribe said is correct but as whay I said !!!! 3 hours out of more than 20 runtime hours is not normal if your computer was on continously. Please find the client_state.xml file in the BOINC program dir and look for a value like ighlighed below
----------------------------------------<time_stats> <on_frac>0.763587</on_frac> <connected_frac>0.000000</connected_frac> <active_frac>0.959469</active_frac> <cpu_efficiency>0.987224</cpu_efficiency> <last_update>1190573675.109375</last_update> </time_stats> What does yours say?
