BOINC on a group of computers behind a firewall

I have a network of 10 PCs in a corporate network behind a firewall that has all the ports blocked that I need to upload/download work units. I have admnistrator rights to these machines and have installed BOINC but now I am looking for a way to use another machine (also running BOINC) to download work units and distribute them to these machines and then to upload the results.

I've done some searching and it seems to be a tricky issue but I've not found a description of how to actually get this done.

Any suggestions or pointers to other discussions would be appreciated.

Can you set up a proxy?

Unfortunately not, even http access via 8080 requires a session password and the corporate policy won't allow any exceptions.

Open BOINC manager. Make sure you are in advanced view. If you see "Messages!Pause!Prefences!advanced View' at the bottom of the window, click on 'Advanced View'.

Click 'Advanced', on the menu bar at the top.
Select 'Options...'
Click 'HTTP Proxy' tab.

Can you use this tab to enter your session password?

Re: BOINC on a group of computers behind a firewall

I'm probably out of my depth, but if you access to the router or gateway you might be able to remap boinc ports to ones not blocked by the firewall. The firewall would see traffic on unblocked ports, but the packets would be remapped to boinc ports on the router. Don't know if communications coming in would be covered by the change or if you'd have to remap those too.

Sure, I did that two weeks ago, but the port (can't recall which one offhand) that is used to upload/download work units is blocked and inaccessible to me, even after entering the proxy and userid/password.

This is an environment where I cannot access any routers/gateways/switches and cannot get any network access changed. There is absolutely no chance of getting network changes implemented.

So I'm back to my original question, how do I get work units to and from these systems without having direct internet connectivity to those machines?

Re: BOINC on a group of computers behind a firewall

Most projects use http(post 80), but WCG is different since it uses https(port 443) as well.

So if you can not communicate with WCG using port 80 and port 443, likely you are out of luck. BOINC is not designed to pass a WU between systems.

Re: BOINC on a group of computers behind a firewall

I tried to do some research on this (slow day) by searching on the term "sneakernet". If I understand the posts correctly, you can set one networked pc to download work units and then copy the entire directory structure to media and transfer to second boinc directory on the non-networked machine. However it seems that you have to one networked pc for every non-networked pc you want to use. If I missed something, I hope someone will jump in to clarify. In your case, that doesn't seem doable. I guess you could rename the networked computer after every download and try contacting the server under the new name, but I suspect that boinc probably keeps track of such things so you might also need separate installations of boinc - just guessing. As Lawrence Hardin says in one post
Boinc without network connection
This sort of sneakernet mode of operation is possible, but it has many hidden gotchas and is frustratingly difficult. It is probably more reasonable to put that time and effort into a presentation trying to convince your company to become a partner of IBM's World Community Grid.

See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewOurPartners.do and http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewBecomePartner.do

A good start might be to test the water by asking for permission to run a single copy of the UD Client and of the BOINC client on 2 computers connected to the Internet. This gives your local system manager a non-threatening way to learn how well the grid software works (or doesn't work) on his network while letting you learn about his concerns and opinions.

Sincerely doubt it works, but port 443(https) is a must for outward traffic, therefore if you are able to put https over port 80, i saw the functionality in WinXPpro, you might get it to work. Not sure if WCG expects the handshake to forcefully come from a port 443 client.

It's been commented before on properly configured firewalls. Why is 443 outward blocked? It's the common Secure port for save transactions. I could bank in the office and up/download. But, we have to respect the IT meister and the corp.policies.... if they don't want that i/o it wont go. Not sure if they'd be so happy about AC@H jobs of 77mb in and 13mb up per pop to the outside world. 10 machines would be material if run 24/7. Conspiring here to work on re-routing past/thru the firewall throws up ethics questions!

A solution is, quite laborious, to set up a 10 sneakernet instalsl on 1 gateway machine for all the machines with a separate, call them BOINCA, BOINCB etc. Copy the whole install to a jump drive and walk to the machine designated to have BOINA, BOINCB etc. Copy it onto the cruncher with BOINC in off-line mode and when done, use the jump drive to carry it back to your gateway.

Re: BOINC on a group of computers behind a firewall

I'll have to find out which person actually controls access to this port and see if he/she is bribable with alcoholic beverages or the like.

Thanks for the input.
