Where has all the Linux teams gone?

(Or some query of that nature.)

There seem to be basicly two Linux teams: 'Linux' - which has 100 members, an inactive leader, and no forums - and Ubuntu Linux (300 members, non-useful home page).

The Linux group lacks momentum, and I'm not planning to use Ubuntu. Slashdot Users(which also lacks a homepage or, apparently, active forum topic) or userfriendly.org seem to be the next-best choices, but are somewhat off-topic (and it would take time to beat their top members :p)

What is to be done about this sorid state of affairs? Is it possible to request a leader change? Or is there some relevant team about which I am not aware? I'm pretty sure there are somewhat more than 400 Linux users around, so a little rallying should produce a viable team; at least in the top 50 or so.

You're always welcome here. Linux isn't what defines us, it's the open source movement that brings us all together.... or some similar gooey sentiment, anyway :-)

What distro do you prefer to use?

Re: Where has all the Linux teams gone?

Well, we welcome all crunchers, Linux or otherwise, so while we're not a pure Linux group, you would be just as an important part of our team as anyone else. Come give us a try! What's to lose? biggrin

It is possible to request a team captain change. A team member will need to contact WCG Support (use the "Contact Us" which you will find at the bottom of the non-forum pages) and ask that they attempt to contact the current team captain. If there is no response, or if the captain indicates he or she will give up the position, you can make the change.

Re: Where has all the Linux teams gone?

Didactylos: Debian, you peasant. *grin*
Not that they're much different, but hey.

I am actually using Ubuntu on my desktop right now, though, because there wasn't a good version of my WM for Debian when I last installed. Not that they're much different, but hey.

Dave Bell: Thanks.

Does anybody want to volunteer? I'm willing to try myself, but am by way of being a newbie hereabouts and it would probably be better to pass leadership to one of the current high-ranking team members, or just to somebody who's been around for a while.

(moves self to Linux team)

Re: Where has all the Linux teams gone?

Some of the people responding to you have their own teams to look after (like me, for example). So we won't be joining you.

Looking after a team takes a lot of effort even if you have the amazing support I do. Reviving a declining team sounds like quite a challenge - I wish you luck.

If I may offer some advice: start promoting your team, and raise the profile a bit before applying for leadership. That will both give you a chance to get a feel for it, and also give weight to your application when you have a history with the team.

Oh - and UserFriendly runs on FreeBSD :-D

Debian? Don't use it myself, life is too short. Ubuntu? My dad uses Ubuntu... :+)

Re: Where has all the Linux teams gone?

Can't be that bad - the team is still on the top 100 with no input from the leader for the past two years. I'm not planning to run an operation like UF has, just make sure that there *is* a leader and get word out a bit. Some profile-raising sounds like a good plan.

BSD? Don't use it myself, life is too short. My dad uses BSD....
...'course, that's because he's forgotten more about computers than I'll ever know.

Re: Where has all the Linux teams gone?

Didactylos, I've seen a chart somewhere that shows the different CPUs crunching at WCG, but I don't remember seeing one for the different OS. I'm running openSuSE on six of my crunchers, and a mix of Win2K & WinXP on the others.

Re: Where has all the Linux teams gone?

Everyone in our Team uses Linux but we are more of an online gaming team. I use Kubuntu at the moment on this p.c.
