Well, last night I got my first ACH WU. I had BOINC preferences to use at most 100% of CPU time. This morning, I got up, and it was about 76% completed. I turned the throttle down to 70%, because it gets hot in here during the daytime. It did not go to 70%, it went down to about 5% (updating CPU time about 1 second every 20 seconds). So I cranked it back up to 100%, but the progress continued at about 5%. I rebooted the computer, and ACH wouldn't run at all -- said waiting for memory. So I aborted it and got something else.

That's a real pity because the 'waiting for memory' is exactly that. Had that with the Help Defeat Cancer projects regularly when i was using the system for something else. If you run the default Minium Profile and switched to Custom Profile to change the CPU resource, near there is an option to also increase the memory use percent. Crank that up and it would go. The default idle is something like 90%, so it would have been likely to run when you were not at the computer.
----------------------------------------Don't know how you boot, but dont use powerswitch. The models are big and need time to store from ram to disk, so use the operating system restart or shutdown routine.

Ok--
----------------------------------------I got another ACH WU and let it complete. It sure sucks memory. Other apps ran very slow when I initially used them. Max memory usage for ACH was 350 GB. I shut down other apps running in the background not being used, such as Quicktime and RealPlayer. If that wouldn't be enough, I was going to disconnect my modem, and shut down my Norton firewall and Norton Antivirus, which is a REAL memory hog. Under results, my WU was marked "inconclusive", as all the other WUs that didn't error. What's that mean? [Edit 1 times, last edit by littlepeaks at Sep 7, 2007 3:48:27 AM] |

Hi littlepeaks,
Under results, my WU was marked "inconclusive", as all the other WUs that didn't error. What's that mean? This means that the African Climate@Home project is uncovering some program problems that need solving. We are providing the data that did not show up when it was running on a lab computer. Here's a link to an FAQ in the Start Here section which explains 'inconclusive'. There are a total of 9 Statuses for work unit that can show on the Result Status Page.
----------------------------------------The Inconclusive description: "The result was returned to the server and validation was attempted but the system could not determine which results it should consider to be the valid ones. New results were sent out for this workunit and validation will be attempted again when those results are returned."
