I dont know too much about work unit demands for hardware. But Linux seems to do great with reviving dead machines and making them seem faster.
would making a WCG build of linux based on knoppix for the sole purpose of resurrecting atticware and devoting 100% of the limited resources to use be useful? The less hardware requirements the more machines you can get. (or is it just cheaper to recycle the atticware and run a more energy efficient machine) Atticware converted into a dedicated terminal does happen.Thats where there are so many tiny versions of linux. I run 2 "broken"laptops just for WCG. This question is not about running boinc on a system, its about converting boinc into the system itself. thoughts? |

Generally, newer CPUs are so much faster, and so much more energy efficient that "atticware" is best avoided. Of course, if you're talking about computers that are just a couple of years old, this won't apply. But I think you are talking about very old computers.
One cheap new computer can do the work of half a dozen ancient machines - and at a fraction of the electricity cost. |

he is at least talking about some P2 generation of the processor, 'cause that will run Knoppix!
