Bad upgrade

Tried upgrading awhile back to the lastest stable version (can't remember but about 8 months ago), anyway, I was using v5.4.9 with zero problems, (this is the version I went back to). Decided to upgrade to 5.8.17 thinking this should have no problems since a higher version is available. NOT. From reading my messages, I lost 2 days work. According to the messages, was instructed to reset boinc. I did. Waiting on the 1st completed WU to see if there is still a problem. Is this a boinc clitch or what? If it is, how can other newer versions be made without the older ones being completely stable before starting a new one. I am a bit peeved loosing 2 days work with my quad core mac right now. Suggestions why upgrading sucks and risky? This is the 2nd time I got burned upgrading.

Re: Bad upgrade

I feel your pain. I tried to convert all my machines, some of which are pretty old, to boinc 5.8 and had problems. I won't say definitively that boinc was to blame in every case, but I DO know that I was able to run UD agent on those same machines with no problems.

Then the announcement came out that all future projects would be boinc and that UD would be phased out by mid 2008. So I figured I would try to upgrade to the current download from WCG, boinc 5.10. I don't know what changes where made to this version, but it seems to run on each of the 3 machines that had a problem with boinc 5.8. One is an old AMD chip running at 800mhz with only 512mb of memory. With the firewall/virus software plus boinc, the machine is REAL slow with lots of page file access, but it works. Setting an automated utility to boot the machine every day helps.

If you have the time, I'd give 5.10 a try. Otherwise, I think a new version with an uninstaller for UD agent will be coming out in September so you could also wait until then.

Considering the fact that about 2/3 of the current clients are on UD not boinc, we're in for some interesting times. WCG is supposed to be sending out emails to members to encourage them to make the switch. So . . . it might be better to do it sooner rather than later. At least if you do it now, you'll be more likely to get tech support with whatever problems you might have.

Re: Bad upgrade

Just looked at my stats to see the errors. None. Received credit but according to my log, I don't think I should have. Can anyone tell me where to look for my older logs in mac os? Want to look at my last log and maybe send to the gurus here. Scratchin my head on this one. I'll resume with this version until I figure it out.

Re: Bad upgrade

I have a mac but found it anyway. Here is the message I get: faah...exited with zero status but no finish file. Then the next line reads if this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. I did reset the project but it happened again. I shut down the computer, restarted and am watching for this again. If this happens again, whats the fix? crying

This message is meaningless. It is an old DEBUG comment that we have asked to have removed from the application.

Re: Bad upgrade

So your telling me to ignore this and keep on crunchin with this version? Was there any messages sent to boinc users about this particular version doing this so us users don't waste time reseting the project only to find out this normal? Does the next higher version have this same bug?

Re: Bad upgrade

Bearcat - there is some bad advice in this thread. Feel free to ignore it all.

The sad truth is there are fewer Mac users, so the Mac versions are not tested as extensively as other versions. Therefore, it would be of great benefit to BOINC (and other Mac users) if you joined the BOINC alpha testing team.

We have heard a few reports of Mac problems recently, so there is definitely an issue that needs solving. Unfortunately, we don't have enough information to pin it down. Your help would be much appreciated.

Please keep track of any work units that cause trouble, and any circumstances surrounding the failure. Abort any failed work units after a reasonable attempt to get them to continue, and I'll ask both BOINC and WCG to look into the failures.

Re: Bad upgrade

Am asuming you mean the beta testing so just opted in for beta testing. Let me know if I am wrong and point me in the right direction. Thanks.
