Beta test of August 29

the downloads will be around 77MB and uploads will be around 13MB - this is after they have been compressed

I am afraid I know the answer since uploads are mentioned but I want to make sure: do you mean that there will be that much traffic (and disk space usage) for each WU, or is some part of it only for the application?

That's rather worrying, not for the beta itself (few WUs) but for running the normal project. Both from a client or server viewpoint.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Beta test of August 29

I'd second that request - about knowing what the project is. I didn't see anything in member news posts - going back to July - and scanning thread titles going back to May.

Re: Beta test of August 29

It's either X-ray crystallography for cancer or South African climate study... I thought the cancer stuff was coming first.

Either way, 13MB uploads sounds like some monster WUs.

Re: Beta test of August 29

When they come they come in size. Lasting 12-15 hours on a reference machine. What you see is not how you get it as the transfer tab shows the uncompressed file sizes for down- but also upload (BOINC 5.8.15 min requirement), so don't be shocked to see numbers bigger than quoted by knreed. Have calculated that the sum of data transfer is no less on a Mb per hour processing basis as for instance SIMAP is (6mb download for 1 hour crunch).

Imagine this running on the 'to be phased out' UD client: Download 20 minutes, no crunching for 20 minutes :O

Suggest to remove the additional buffer setting if on 5.10 and set connect time to low for all client versions, like 0.1 days, so you wont get multiple beta's tasks and not be able to meet the deadline!

Re: Beta test of August 29

Jean,

The upload result from a work unit will be around 13MB. We are working on ways to decrease the download size of the work units but it looks like each work unit will be 77MB. The executable for linux is 8MB uncompressed.

Re: Beta test of August 29

uplinger, thank you for answering. It is clear that these WUs will not be the "light" ones that smaller machines and dial-up members may be expecting.
Regarding what the project is about I think I shall be able to wait until it is officially launched. smile

Cheers. Jean.

Edit: added "and dial-up members"

Re: Beta test of August 29

WCG have some really well thought out plans for preventing the large work units becoming a problem. I'll not steal their thunder by telling you their plans early.

As for which project this beta is for - I couldn't possibly say. But maybe someone will draw a parallel with the size of the CPDN work units?

Thanks for the information, Sekerob. I changed my connection from 1.0 to 0.1 days. It appears that the planning is excellent as usual, but the announcement of the beta test could have included the information in your post. <Maybe I'll get one of these beta units in a few hours when dddt finishes. >
