Team Slashdot crunched beyond the 400.000 'results returned' mark,
and is well on it`s way to break through the 100.000.000 'points generated' line. Well done, dear teammates! |

Team Slashdot is still #1, a bit less powerful than #2-#3 combined. A shame so many persons are inactive.
----------------------------------------I am myself experiencing trouble, with 7 WUs aborted among the 8 latest ones, half aborted beyond 70 hours, but I'm still crunching when I don't use the computer at all. |

Team Slashdot is still #1, a bit less powerful than #2-#3 combined. Lionel -- Any chance you can get an article published on the SlashDot website? The original one fired up your membership and brought so many of you to the WCG. The project NEEDS Slashdot! Perhaps having a Linux client will help whenever that gets released (soon we hope). In a thread in the Suggestions/Feedback forum, Victors (one of the WCG Techs) said, Regarding Linux ETA, we have promised this before the end of the year. If things go smoothly, you might be pleasantly surprised much sooner. That is about all I can say right now. Sorry. I know that will be happy news at SlashDot! |

Getting one posted now is a bit... well... obviously chasing points. People might see through that.
However, when a linux client comes out that is the best way to crunch it. However, i would suggest a 2 team approach. Linux Slash vs Windows Slash. See if linux client can chase down the windows client lead. Give it the desktop PC market analogy. and you will get every admin and his dog installing it like crazy. |

Imho this news (even if it`s great to know that things are indeed moving!) is a bit on the thin side to run as a story on /.. If the linux client is here, people will want to try it out instantly. There has got to be something of value. There`s little to no room for 'asking to come back later for the real thing'. So it better run without interruptions or problems or other crap. Also, giving out the details about the technical features on the peculiarities of the client-server system is half of the story!
----------------------------------------So, better to have a tested working-version than a working test-version!! Don`t worry, when the story hits, it will hit hard. And people will respond. Especially given the trackrecord of /. and the rising threat of MOT and TW teams.. So give it time, it`s still too early. I'd wait several weeks too before submitting another news on Slashdot. As I can see in other topics, there's still more than 30% left in the WCG phase I, and nothing could please Slashdot readers and boost participation more than a working Linux client.
----------------------------------------SMP in both clients would be another great thing, as multiple-core processors are becoming more and more common, but threading a non-threaded application is not necessarily an easy task, and it requires lots of testing. Although I've used Linux all year at the university as a computer science student, I don't have a permanent Linux install on my computer yet, but I will in several weeks. I'm not sure the Slashdot team should be split between Windows and Linux clients: such competition, although it will give an indication on how much the Linux client is used, is bound to be unfair, as the 600 years crunched by Windows can hardly be surpassed until the end of the WCG Phase I. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by DEBROUX Lionel at Jun 16, 2005 7:47:42 AM] |
