Creating AI via Distributed Computing

Probably not going to join this project anytime soon, but I think the concept is pretty cool:

http://www.intelligencerealm.com/Countries/Local/system.asp

This project is part of a larger project that is reverse engineering the brain in order to build a large scale artificial intelligence system.

The human brain has an estimated 100 billion neurons. The number of neurons of all the people in the world is 7 billion times that. Complex software needs to deal with scalability issues straight from the start to avoid later problems. We will need to build a massive network of detailed neurons with biophysical properties. We would need a neural network simulator, a generator system that builds artificial neurons based on specific properties and a visualization system to be able to monitor and control the system. Our conservative estimates is that perhaps thousands of people would be needed at some point in time in order to build that. This figure will go up from 2 people, right now, as we progress, until the moment when we will be able to have the machine itself take over some tasks. From that point on, the number of people required to help would go down. Nonetheless there are very few companies capable of such effort to date. We need the public support to help us build that.

Re: Creating AI via Distributed Computing

I checked the link. This project is with a two-person company; while that in itself does not indicate that it is a scam or is unreliable, the point is that we don't really know anything about the company or the two people in it. IBM goes to _GREAT_ lengths to ensure that projects that we work on via WCG are not going to compromise our computers. While the project for AI seems like a great goal, we don't know anything about the company, and for all we know they could be planting malware on a volunteer's computer. As is clearly stated on the BOINC site at Berkeley, volunteers could compromise their computers with distributed computing programs, and the element of trust therefore enters into the picture. In this case, I'm not about to blindly trust a small company which hasn't established a reputation yet and probably doesn't have a lot to lose. That's one reason why I promote WCG so heavily -- not just because we do humanitarian work, but also because I'm convinced that the projects we run are ABSOLUTELY trustworthy.

Cheers.

Re: Creating AI via Distributed Computing

Hi there,

My name is Ovidiu and I am the project leader at Intelligence Realm.
You are right to point that there is not much information about the project, but we have just started. We are not there yet.

Quote: "for all we know they could be planting malware on a volunteer's computer". Right! I have worked hard 20 years to get to the point where I start planting malware on people's computers. That's my scientific goal.

I found this post very offensive but this is to be expected. This project will change a lot of things and many people will come out against it, because it is against their beliefs or financial interests. In this case it seems that because our project didn't come through WCG and it doesn't have IBM backing is not to be trusted. Everyone can judge for themselves.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Ovidiu Anghelidi

Personally I think your project is very interesting and promising. I think AI could greatly benefit mankind. I'm looking forward to reading more about your project as it develops, and wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

Re: Creating AI via Distributed Computing

People are always, or should always be suspicious of downloaded software. It's nothing personal. Anyone who's been around the block a few times should realize that and not be offended. It's not like any accusations are being made.

Part of the reason no one has been able to create a simulated human brain is the fact that we still don't understand very well how it works. It's not completely a black box anymore but it is still very opaque.

Another problem is that fact that a single neuron can connect with thousands of other neurons. Assuming each neuron is binary - either on or off - then you're talking about 10^11 times more than 10^3 possible connections. And neurons are a lot more complex than simply being on/off switches.

At this point, I think attempts to use directed evolution for creating an AI has the best chance of short term success.

Re: Creating AI via Distributed Computing

Hello Ovidiu!
You are wrong to take it this way.
Nobody representing IBM or WCG has written in this thread yet, only plain members like me.
The main reason why writers said "be careful" is because, as you have acknowledged
there is not much information about the project
and I would add "and none about the project people".

So until you take some time to explain who you and your partner are, and what are the purpose and objectives of your project, i.e. research, commercial, fun, or worse (but you would probably not mention it) any reasonable potential participant will stay away and warn peers to be careful.

Distributed Computing has already been used for harmful reasons therefore it is not being paranoïd to be suspicious about new not-documented projects. You will probably find the same reactions in the forums of many important teams.

Now the ball is in your camp; either provide the currently missing information in your site, or be not surprised to raise negative reactions.

Good luck. Jean.
