Similar to Help Defeat Cancer where all image data coupled to best treatment is better and more consistently identified by a computer who's been taught al the tricks, now Alzheimer has been added to that list:
BBC News: PC beats doctor in scan tests

A computer does better than a doctor at diagnosing certain brain diseases, research has suggested.

Experts taught a standard computer how to diagnose Alzheimer's from brain scans, and got a 96% success rate.

The accuracy of diagnosis from standard scans, blood tests and interviews carried out by a clinician is 85%.

Breakthrough' in malaria fight

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7504649.stm

Australian scientists have identified a potential treatment to combat malaria by pinpointing the process that helps the disease hijack red blood cells.

They have found the key to an adhesive that stops the parasite being flushed out of the body by the immune system....

[Added: BBC is not very good at consistent information provision: In the span of 7 months the fatalities due malaria was cut from 3 million to 1 million.

You beat me to it, Sekerob!

This sounds like a major research breakthrough. I hope it leads to a treatment.

Actually, Sekerob, you highlight an important detail about tropical diseases: getting accurate statistics in developing countries is very difficult.

WHO quote "more than 1 million" - and, indeed, 3 million is more than 1 million. The only more precise estimate I found was 1.5-2.7 million deaths/year - presumably the BBC took the high estimate and rounded it off.
