That is a real breakthrough. It seems to be the first vaccine against a pathogen larger than a bacterium.

I seem to recall some experimental vaccines against small parasites. A malaria vaccine would be a major advance. But so far the study sizes are so small that they are what I privately call 'boutique' statistics. I am excited by the news, but I foresee a good part of a decade being spent on follow-up studies.

I am afraid this is normal in the modern world. The gap between discovery and utilisation is up to 40 years. Patent rights become dearer every year and expire after 16 years, so there is no incentive for an individual to discover anything.

Re: Interesting Medical News (Non-WCG Related Projects)

Scientists found that dieters who cut out high energy foods such as pasta, bread and potatoes could end up starving their brain of the fuel it needs to function properly.

Their study on women aged 22 to 55 showed that those on a low carbohydrate meals suffered impaired memory function after just one week.

Low carbohydrate dieters "showed a gradual decrease on the memory-related tasks compared with the low-calorie dieters". Their reaction times were also slower. However, they did do better on short-term attention tests.

"The brain," they said, "needs glucose for energy and diets low in carbohydrates can be detrimental to learning, memory and thinking." The findings will appear in the February 2009 edition of the journal Appetite.

May depend on what they substitute for the high-starch foods. The liver can make glucose from protein in order to feed the brain, instead of using the glucose that comes from digesting the starch.

Substituting fats instead produces ketones as a byproduct of using the fats; too much of those slows down the brain.

Substitution of fats produces ketone bodies as a by-product of using the fats; too much of them slows down the brain.
Yes, and the ketone needs glucose for its catabolism. As they say,''Fat burns in a fire of carbohydrate.''
Katabolism of some proteins produces 2-oxoisovalerate and 2-oxoisocaproate. These must be handled by specific catabolic pathways. Eventually these pathways lead to glycolysis or the TCA cycle.

Geron Receives FDA Clearance to Begin World&#...c Stem Cell-Based Therapy

Geron to Study GRNOPC1 in Patients with Acute Spinal Cord Injury

MENLO PARK, Calif., January 23, 2009 - Geron Corporation (Nasdaq: GERN) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted clearance of the company's Investigational New Drug (IND) application for the clinical trial of GRNOPC1 in patients with acute spinal cord injury.

The clearance enables Geron to move forward with the world's first study of a human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-based therapy in man. Geron plans to initiate a Phase I multi-center trial that is designed to establish the safety of GRNOPC1 in patients with "complete" American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grade A subacute thoracic spinal cord injuries. ....
