wcg and energy

Reading a previous thread about making a deduction for participating in wcg made me think about extra power consumption.

Substainable development being in many thoughts nowadays I often asked myself the amount of extra energy wcg is responsible for. Not saying this to put a brake on people participating as I don't think it relevant on a personnal scale. But all this people leaving their computer on 24h active in computing instead of being iddle or off must have an impact speaking of 155 years a day.

I'm not good enough in math to make the evaluation even if it can't be other than an evaluation due to heterogeneousness of each unit participating. I'm sure some of you out there can help in giving us an idea of what it represents. Then converting it into money with average energy price could make us realize it has a real strengh that could be used.

So many people don't even know about grid processing some publicity would be appreciated to reach them and it could be of power supplyer interest to do it.

Re: wcg and energy

thank you for your answer, it's not what I expected though. I thought "personal subjects related to the research that is running on World Community Grid" was the place to post it.

Re: wcg and energy

Hi scleranthus,

over time quite a few threads were started discussing the procons of distributed processing of large computational problems. You might want to peruse the fora and join in with the last discussion thread on the subject: Grid computing vs energy conservation

cheers

This forum is intended to support those who have been affected by cancer, HIV, etc....it is NOT the forum to discuss the cost of running your PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
