Getting BOINC to work

I've just installed BOINC after running the UD agent and have a few questions.

When i start BOINC both the client and manager want to ring home, and will not run until they do, how do i set it to just run as a background service (as UD)?

When i first ran it it downloaded 2 WUs both of which appear to have been in memory (i couldn't find the non-active one on the HDD), how can i download WUs to to the HDD to load and run from there (as ud_mon)?

How can i change the device name (i have the option in the UD profile but not the BOINC profile)?

I am using Netmeter, but when BOINC is ringing home neither netmeter nor the two-computer symbol 'light up' to indicate traffic, why is this and how can i stop it?

Re: Getting BOINC to work

Netmeter isn't going to light up to indicate traffic if there isn't any.

---------------------------------------------------

Check your device manager. There are four BOINC profiles, default, home, school, work. Your active device should be connected to one of these. Near the bottom is this network usage area.

Network Usage

Confirm before connecting to Internet? Yes No
Disconnect when done? Yes No
Connect to network about every days
Maximum upload rate: Kbytes/sec
Maximum download rate: Kbytes/sec

The "connect to network every __ days" determines how many workunits you will get. The default is very short, perhaps as small as 0.1 days (I forget). When you first start out though, it may take awhile for BOINC to figure that you are sending good workunits, and then give you more to work on.

This number can be increased, but resist setting it higher than 3-4. Mine is 2.5, which is working well.

You should be able to change the BOINC device name when first setting one up, but not after that.

There is some other discussion elsewhere about running as a service. It is a little more involved.

Re: Getting BOINC to work

I've just installed BOINC after running the UD agent and have a few questions.

When i start BOINC both the client and manager want to ring home, and will not run until they do, how do i set it to just run as a background service (as UD)? BOINC runs the same way as UD which never ran as a service unless some heavy tweaking took place. If you download BOINC from Berkeley and install, Service is offered as an option. This means it will run before anybody logs onto the system. The downside is, that you will not get any graphics unless again some heavy tweaking and compromising security. This will change in version 6.0 of BOINC.... next year.

When i first ran it it downloaded 2 WUs both of which appear to have been in memory (i couldn't find the non-active one on the HDD), how can i download WUs to to the HDD to load and run from there (as ud_mon)? BOINC has the same function as UD_mon build inside. All you have buffered is listed in the "Advanced view > Tasks" tab of BOINCmgr. Restof above describes where to set the buffer size which is not in terms of quantity, but in terms of time. BOINC will compute how many you can do in that time span and it will vary as durations of work units vary.

How can i change the device name (i have the option in the UD profile but not the BOINC profile)? The device name of a BOINC client is equal the name as the computer is known on the network. Assuming you are still on windows, the System Control Panel should show the name by which WCG has identified the device.

I am using Netmeter, but when BOINC is ringing home neither netmeter nor the two-computer symbol 'light up' to indicate traffic, why is this and how can i stop it? Not familiar with NetMeter. If it's similar as CFO speed or DUmeter, they will record traffic when actual file transfers take place. Did you want it or not want it to record traffic as you ask how to stop it./b]

Re: Getting BOINC to work

I've decided to remove BOINC and go back to UD.

Thanks for your replies.
