I read about the cow virus in UK and that it may be from a lab. That is not a good thing, how could that happen?

Scribe One of the labs there makes vaccine......hmmmm.....would they now sell more vaccine.....conspiracy theories rule, ok! Vaccine is from the Latin word "Vaccus", meaning "bull", and we all know what that means. Hold on, though. There is an old saying, "Set a thief to catch a thief"............ Is someone setting a bull or cow ("vacca") to be caught by all the local herds? |

It probably depends on what containment level was used. You can probably do research on a cold virus in a lab coat. For something like Marburg, you'd be talking about bunny suits and negative atmospheric pressure labs.
----------------------------------------Stuff probably gets out of labs all the time. I once knew someone who poured radioactive labeling compounds down the drain. Granted, they only had a half-life of a few days, but even so. Viruses are by definition parasites (or at best, symbiotes) so they don't tend to survive very long outside of a host. If the virus your talking about can infect cows but not people, it's hard to see how it could have gotten out accidentally. Maybe the lab had a "bring your cow to work" day. ![]() ![]() |

Seriously, there is a possibility of escape from one or other of the two facilities at Pirbright, namely, Pirbright research laboratories and Merriel vaccine factory. Precautions at both are extensive and complex and it is as easy for a worker to forget both halves of a double precaution as for a man to forget both belt and braces.
----------------------------------------Having had the bad news, you may now look forward to some good news. The contract for provision of vaccine to limit the spread of the virus looks likely to be awarded to . . . (yes, Alan) . . . Merriel. Vaccine is from the Latin word "Vaccus", meaning "bull", and we all know what that means. No, it's from "cow" - "The term derives from Edward Jenner's use of cowpox ("vacca" means cow in Latin), which, when administered to humans, provided them protection against smallpox"Hold on, though. There is an old saying, "Set a thief to catch a thief"............ Is someone setting a bull or cow ("vacca") to be caught by all the local herds? |
