My suggestion is we should notice these things more. For it is the human drama that drives this place more than the numbers can tell.

Wish they would get rid of the dead computers to give us a real number of crunching computers. Not sure how this could be done though.

biggrin Re: Passing 700K! Next stop, 30 Billion?

Well, if 185 CPU years is divided out into 24/7 cruncher units. it would point to about 70k cores reporting a work unit per day. But this is a very low end stat. If you extrapolate the the figures, the numbers are permutated buy the capacitance of the group size. So as time passes, the stat can be seen easily to grow 40% before the amount of growth would taper. Plus i have found that about 40-45% of the average crunchers here dont run 24/7 dedicated, the number of actual system could be seen as over 200K.

If I were to take a stab at the number, I would go 245K +/- 10K. But that, even though 1/3 the recorded number, is increadable stat if true. As it would include the reinstalls, the goofs, the tests, the upgrades the this, that and the other, as well as those who have come and gone.

I think this has been on the wish list for longer than I've been member at WCG, and discussed, so not going to repeat the 'when we hope it happens' or the 'best guess extrapolation of the 'flux capacitance quantum'. Only thing happening is, that if a member, not contributed at all for a 3 month period, will they be send a reminder note to ask "Waz zup, please report back for duty".

Re: Passing 700K! Next stop, 30 Billion?

I would suggest anyone not crunching over 1 year to get cut, after repeated attempts throughout the year fail of course. I have 2 members in my group that haven't crunched in almost 2 years.

Re: Passing 700K! Next stop, 30 Billion?

In our team there are 486 "current" members who have never recorded one single second of crunching... Out of a total of 1934 current members, that is 25.1 %! If WCG decided to leave new members, say, six months to find the way to start really crunching, that would already give 265 members to clear (13.7 %).

I know our team's profile is not that of every team (those never-active members are most probably the result of an initial big mass mailing) but it is probably not the only team where people have registered to see what it is about and never went any further.

Sure it is nice to be #6 in the "by members" list, but if that does not reflect real activity it is not meaning much... smile

Note: If it is mandatory to be registered in WCG for posting in the forum, please be careful if you decide to implement something in this area. The "oldest" of these candidates to cleaning (in our team) is the HCMD project correspondent who gave us information during this project... smile (I hope she crunches under another id).

Cheers. Jean.
