GPU/multicore client?

Hello. I'm not sure if I should put this post in this section, but I'm hoping that the WCG Admin will see to it that this post gets in the right place ;)

I'm wondering if there's some new WCG client in preparation which would take full advantage of the multi core CPUs and/or GPUs like GeForce8800 and such?

I'm using Intel Core2 Duo at 2,2Ghz and GF8800GTS which is a lot of horse-power, but my WCG client is running at 50-65% all the time (with CPU throttle set at 100%), not to mention all the raw power of NVidia's GPU that is still unused for WCG computations.

Some distributed computing programs (such as F@H) have already included some clients for better utilization of today's hardware and I very much hope WCG shall do the same in the near future. :)

Please can anyone share some info about that?

Re: GPU/multicore client?

Hi Davor Izakovic,

The United Devices agent is limited to one core and will be phased out (eventually - continued support for FAAH & HPF2). Download BOINC and it will take advantage of both of your cores (can handle more than 2).

There have been many threads about why WCG is not pursuing GPU clients at this time (most notably because they're on limited architecture and not thoroughly tested). The CAs probably have a more eloquent answer.

Re: GPU/multicore client?

I see. Thanks very much for the info.

I'll try and use the BOINC then ;)
