Maintenance notification

A little while ago, the servers were down for maintenance and there was no access to most of the website. I noticed though that the home page was still available. When something like this happens, it might be a good idea to put some notification on the home page about the maintenance work since there was no access to the forum and official messages sections. Just a thought. That will let members know what's going on. Thanks for listening.

Re: Maintenance notification

It was, as the first message in the member news, read-only, maintenance thread at the very top of the forum:

https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=15352

We are going to be performing some maintenance on our servers over the next 2 hours. There may be intermittent outages on the website and with the UD agents during this period. [Jul 16, 2007 10:11:11 AM]

Re: Maintenance notification

The problem is, if the forum section is down as was the case earlier today, no one can read that message, unless there is some other way of accessing the official messages section that I'm not aware of.

Re: Maintenance notification

The only part down for me was the signon screen. The forum message was still readable and that is how I found out the reason for not being able to sign on after getting an error screen. I suppose that the forum could still itself have been down at some point. That would be rare. I still saw the forum.

Re: Maintenance notification

I tried accessing the forum earlier, but kept getting the sign on screen. The only section I could access was the home page.

In most cases, WCG has been good about giving plenty of advance warning about scheduled downtime.

This is not a gripe, just a suggestion.

Re: Maintenance notification

Next time, just try the forums button without messing with the My Grid page if you see an error. You should be able to read the messages as a guest. If the forum is gone, as you found, perhaps another mechanism is needed.

Re: Maintenance notification

Hi sierrabound,

The very idea was suggested in past and revived a week or so ago as e.g. a 2 liner on front page bottom for if *major* works were being done with ideally a few days notice. Whilst Sign-In was not possible for some time today, the Recent Threads and Forum Index pages remained up for reading as they most always are. Normally only during the weekly scheduled maintenance, member news is not accessible for a brief period between 08:00 and 09:00 UTC. As always WCG regrets any interruption.

cheers
