XLS files should be readable/editable with Works (certainly the latest version does link ).

If you want OpenOffice, you can always get it from someone who is selling it via something like Ebay. If you are really stuck, let me know and I will burn you a copy and send it to you (may take longer than a week due to posting from the UK though! )

Hi Payne in FLA,
maybe you could be able to open the sheet from your MS Works. If not, I suggest downloading this free soft:
http://www.software602.com/products/pcs/download.html
Its a a sort of office suite containing "Tab", which is spreadsheet processor capable to crunch XLS files. It will surely work with those estimation tools.
