Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

first, windoze reports hyper-threaded machine usage at half the expected value because it thinks there are two physical processors. The actual algorithm should include the time the idle task process is consuming, but since I'm not working for MS, I can't make that change for you.

Second, are you using Boinc or UD, as the throttle mechanism is different. UD is easy to throttle, using a down loadable utility, and Boinc is throttle via it's control page (local or web). There are a number of posts concerning the best way to throttle both products.

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Hi Team,

I've been around since April, but have not posted until now. My innate shyness, I suppose.

Anyway, I have a couple of Centrino Duo machines and a couple of P4 hyperthread guys who are running at 30% rather than the expected 60% level. Is there something I have done incorrectly?

I would also be happy to let them (and the older guys brought out of retirement for this project) run at 100% when idle. Is there a easily reversible way to change the throttle limitation that does not involve editing the registry (all machines are on Windows XP Pro SP-2)?

Thanks for any suggestions.

In Christ,

Ron

Ron how wonderful to see you! Been watching your stats biggrin which are not shy LOL your doing great!

First we need to know if you are running BOINC or UD agent.

Your 2 core machines can run 2 WU's at a time as long as you have BOINC. You adjust the throttle in your device profile (I quoted this from another thread):

^This picture shows everything you need.
A. Ignore the red arrow as that was an answer for another member.

B.You want to put 100.0 in the project weight line. this fixes the throttle for BOINC.

C.The processors you could put 2 instead of 4.

D.The upload/download your preference or just leave blank.

E. The connect to network is a good value. I use 2.5 days. It's okay to use 3 days as well.

F. Make sure you SAVE and then when your next communication with the servers is your info will be updated, or you can hit the update button on BOINC Manager on the Project page. Let us know how it works.

G. Hyperthreading is not true 2 core. It is 1 CPU and will not run 2 wu's at once.

H. The Switch between projects line is only if you run more projects than WCG, otherwise you don't have anything to switch between LOL

Hope this helps :-) Let us know if you need any more help, as there are lots of smarter teckies around!

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

And now, life from Italy a little intermission in the official C. program for some clarifications on the instructions by Diana. G.

On B. Project Weight is the value relative to other projects attached to a BOINC client. E.g. if you have Seti and WCG attached with 100, effectively each gets on average 50% of the processing time. This means each gets approximately 12 hours per core per day

On G. Hyperthreading, a true Hyperthreaded machine can ran 2 jobs simultaneous, but it can result in user impairment as the CPU is really only one core which is thru tricks virtualized to act as 2. WCG recommend to set the Multiprocessor value to 1.

The real value to throttle is not in the screenshot but is just above and called "Use no more than: 60 % of processor time" (default "Minimum Impact" profile value). At that value it will run 3 seconds and pause 2, so in effect you get 60/100*24=14.4 hours per day of computations done per CPU core.

To get to any of these values you have to select "Custom Profile" in the My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profile > BOINC Default profile e.g.

AND congratulations on creating your private forum.... now dont you speak there in ways requiring a long letter to an office near here worried

Oh, 1 day reprieve, but than you really need to put on the dust masks for a little bit as a herd of cow is coming by.... mooh

.... so far the intermission in the official C. programming biggrin

Gotta keep me in line!! wink

rose Christians are giving... come give with us!

Here is a MSG to us from Elizabeth. (Shane's Friend from ShoutLife.com)

Thank you for all your prayers for Shane! I believe he is going through
Chemo and Radiation now..
Lord bless you and be your helper through out the week!!

For You meet him with the blessings of goodness;
You set a crown of pure gold upon his head.

He asked life from You, and You gave it to him-
Length of days forever and ever.

His glory is great in Your salvation;
Honor and majesty You have placed upon him.

For You have made him most blessed forever;
You have made him exceedingly glad with Your presence.

For the King trusts in the Lord,
And through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved.
Psalm 21:3-7

Rest in Him!!
Elizabeth

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

One more thing I might add to the "technical" discussion. There is no reason to limit the "connect to the network" to 3 days unless you have dialup. With full time connections (cable, dsl, FiOS), just let it connect whenever it wants - mine is set to theh default values of 0.1 days, with Maximum and Minimum rates set to zero (the default, which I think is unlimited rate).

The only setting you actually change from default is the one Sekerob mentioned under Basic options - increase processor usage. I personally find that 100% is too intrusive so I usually pull it back a bit. This is a preference thing depending upon how you use your computer and how you expect it to respond.

BUT everyone has assumed that you are using BOINC, not UD to run the work units. If you are using UD, post here again and let us know. The UD agent is also throttled back a bit by default, and there is a different way to adjust it's CPU usage.

Also, if you have true dual core CPU (not an Intel "HT"), then I thought there was benefit to letting it run on both. I have one HT, and I have to force the settings to use only 1 CPU. Trying to use both actually slows down the system since they bottleneck at the shared-core components and you lose CPU function/time swapping between the two threads (on HT CPU's). Only BOINC properly supports the dual core function, however. If you are using UD, then you will never see more than 50% processor usage. This, alone, might be a good reason to re-install with BOINC on your dual- cpu's.

The good news is that you can make all these changes globally from this website. Select My Grid tab at top, then Device Manager along the left. The changes are not immediate, but will update on each computer when they re-connect to WCG for a new problem set.

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Dear Team,

Thanks for the kind words (Diana) and all the helpful suggestions.

Indeed, I am using UD rather than BOINC since my understanding is that older, slower machines with limited memory are not happy with BOINC. Being rather challenged at the time, I went with the lowest common denominator, i.e., UD.

I will switch the dual core and HT machines tonight.

FWIW, I still remember how to herd cows from my small farm childhood. LET'S GET'EM! biggrin

In Christ,

Ron
