<Consider this post as feedback. It really isn't a suggestion.>
----------------------------------------Scribe wrote: Hasn't it been nice and peaceful since the Community Section was locked. We have had a nice quiet couple of days with just sensible questions and answers in the Supports sections......do we really need to go back to the noisy free-for-all which usually degenerates into flame-wars all round....why not leave it as it is where at least the pleas asking for support are not lost in the reams of mindless games littering the Recent Posts search! It wouldn't matter. As we all know, animosity will find a forum/section. Personally, I prefer that the "disputes" happen in the Communtiy forum/section. That forum is vistited more by the regular posters. By now, our regulars have a handle on who to dismiss outright, and which threads are controversial and/or argumentative. The Tech Support section attracts a lot of new posters -- usually experiencing problems. We don't want to scare them off with our lack of class, rudeness and tackiness, do we? As usual, I missed the whole broo-ha-ha (I usually just come here once a week). But on my last visit, I saw the beginnings of it. So I can imagine what happened. My hat is off to the C.A.s and WCG Techs. I know how difficult it is to put out a fire... especially without having the behind-the-scenes PMs to privately talk down those involved. Good Job! ![]() Edited for typo. Edited for clarity. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 10, 2007 7:09:27 PM] |

This is the World Community Grid, and that would all but strip out "Community" from it. You said it - this is the grid community, not the word games community. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 10, 2007 7:53:30 PM] |

This is the World Community Grid, and that would all but strip out "Community" from it. You said it - this is the grid community, not the word games community. What does it matter what people chat about ?? You don't have to open those posts if you don't want to...All you people seem to forget that the important thing is that someone is crunching....If it makes someone happy to post about gaming I say more power to them because they are still with us....different strokes for different folks...Most of the people that are complaining are too narrow minded to see that.... |

Heh.
Not posts about gaming. Game threads - you know, word games, and trivia and they can get huge post counts without any meaningful content. And that's fine. But some people think that this frequent posting in the same trivia threads is cluttering up the "recent threads" view. Hopefully we can find a technical solution that will make everyone happy. |

Before the games threads, the chat area was mostly slow-going and empty. We could go back to "Telomerase News".
----------------------------------------We have the same problem locally. A mall owner wants to add an urban Wal-Mart as part of it. The neighbors want to keep the mall "as we remember". As I remembered it, there was a place where the food section "used to be", a wing where stores "used to be" and a central mall where an ice rink "used to be". The stores and food moved to the new hoity-toity mall in the next county. The neighbors want to keep the traffic low, that is, going on by since the mall is practically empty. Since the Wal-Mart size was reduced to appease the neighbors and is going in anyway, the mall owner and/or Wal-Mart got sued last week for building a store larger than a breadbox, that is, "none". The same neighbors also gripe about the congestion while driving to where the stores and Wal-Mart are now. I don't know how the hoity-toity mall is doing. Now, it's even more ordinary, since there are two new uppity and stratospheric malls. We never had a Neiman-Marcus(Needless Markup) before, but we do now. Who buys all of this stuff? My money goes to ever rising property taxes to pay for schools for the students I don't have and the 50% of the others who drop out.

A major problem for quite a few of our crunchers, is that they are no longer able to get out and about as they used to, and the Forums here give them a means to keep in touch with the many friends that they have made, whilst crunching - myself and the creator of this thread for example! I know there are "other places for idle chat" but if we, (and there are a lot of us),went there, our little bit of help here would be lost!
Be realistic, there are talkers- who want the forums, and the variety of friends they meet there, and the takers who simply want what they want, and to heck with everyone else. All I say to them is - the forums can be a lifeline to an awful lot of people, and one day even you may regret it if they are cut! Take care. ![]() |

Well, I know that and don't have any problems with the number of posts.
---------------------------------------- That wasn't my opinion -- just a similar observation about the locals. Go for it. Talk all you want.

As I mentioned in another thread, I acknowledge that the true charter of WCG is to crunch for cures, and that these forums are essentially a nice "perk" we get while crunching. But I believe that there are only maybe 6 "active" game threads going, so I'd respectfully submit that its really not that excessively "noisy" in the grand scheme of things.
Having these social/game forums is like a "cure" for what ails us....be it stress, boredom, loneliness, etc. Admitedly, its by no means on the same level as finding the CURE FOR CANCER, but it still can make a pleasant impact on our mental health. I'd like to hope that a compromise/technical solution can be developed to make (using Edwardian's terminology) the "talkers" and the "nontalkers" moderately happy.... life is too short to be grumpy! Thats my two cents... (those of you not dealing with US currency, please do the conversion to your own local money ) |
