Problem!

...I have a packet that is 50 hours @ 8%. I found out once before when I get a packet like this, my computer is wasteing it's time. I will not receive any points and more than likely the program will drop this packet before it complete's anyway.

...Is there anyway I can go ahead and dump this packet and pick up another before my computer spends 200+ hours working on it?

Re: Problem!

smile Hi Steve 002

Please check the Proteome Graphic on your Info screen
If it is moving then your Work Unit is progressing
It would appear that a number of members including myself are experiencing long run times on current work units
My current one took 1hr 52 minutes to get to 1% and is currently at 12.9% which as taken 18 Hrs 31 Mins
At this rate it will take 143 Hours [Almost 6 days]
No matter, as your completed Work Unit will arive at the sever eventually and you points will be awarded
It will just take longer to see the benefit
I personally love large work units as I like to see a large number of points being contributed to my team in one big lump
Different strokes for different folks, I guess[Grin]
A number of members have run into what they percieved to be a problem with the progress, appearing to have stopped
On most of these Work Units this is not the case
Usually you have reached a part of the work unit that has a really complex fold and consequently take longer
A member here recently had a work unit that appeared to have stopped at 93% and it took 5 hours to get past this complex part of the work unit, however he did complete it and returned it to the server and was awarded his points
Killing the process and starting again is not always the best course of action
The point I am trying to make is Please Have Patience

However if you feel compelled to kill it, bring up Task Manager and look in Processes and click on WCGrid_Rosetta.exe and click on End Process
Then Go to Start/Programs/WorldCommunityGrid/ and double click on World Community Grid Agent and when it restarts you should receive a new Work Unit as long as you are connected to the web

Regards

Re: Problem!

....Thanks for the speedy reply. I had a packet several weeks ago that was at 93% and over 200 hours when I went to bed. When I got up the next morning, a new packet had started but points were not awarded. The points are not an issue as much as the point that if the packet I am working on is not any good or not acceptable. I don't want to waste time on it.

....QUESTION: Did I read where there is a 2 week limit on getting a packet returned. If so, at this rate, will I get it complete in time?

....My computer is an oldy but a goody. Runs like new, but unfortunately with a 600mhz processor is a little on the slow side compared to the rest. So I'm used to used to seeing long packet times. This one just seemed extreme.

Re: Problem!

smile Hi Steve002
This is a dilemma
I know this is no consolation, but by my calculation, it could conceivable take over 600 hours at your current rate of processing to process your current Work Unit
This would inevitably pass the 336 Hours 1 sec [2 Week 1 Sec] rule for returning Work Units and would abort and download a new Work Unit
On the other hand, due to the length of the current Work Units being distributed, being uncommonly long, you could be in a catch 22 situation, meaning to say, your next ono could result in the same problem, being an uncommonly long processing time to complete
I cannot recommend a solution to this dilemma
Perhaps someone else has a better solution
Help Guys!

PS: David Autumns Comunity Admin is online and may have a better solution
If he picks up this thread

PPS I just picked up this info from the last post in this thread so there may be some good news on the horizon

Re: Problem!

Patience patience patience don’t get rid of the Work Unit you are on today just because the math’s say you will be outside of the 2 week limit this doesn’t mean that it will turn out that way. The progress through the work unit is what Rick Alther calls non-deterministic i.e. impossible to work out in advance. It may take 1 hour to get to 99% and then take 3 days to complete that last 1 percent, nobody knows in advance.

Stick with it, if you do reach the 2 week limit you will still be credited with the points that your PC has earned during that 2 weeks of hard slog.

Just keep on crunching otherwise we’ll never reach our goal if everyone keeps abandoning the one they are working on for one possibly shorter!

Regards

Dave

Re: Problem!

Steve,

I got a toooooooo big one on my hand as well, unfortunately on one of my slower machines ( a P3-600 ) blushing blushing According to my calculations it will run for about 18 days or about 400hrs running 24/7.
And to be honnest I am a little disappointed I do not get the change of finishing the WU while I stay well whitin the 21 days limit.... sick
I still hope someone will give me a clue how to cheat the 236hrs crunching limit on the thread I started http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1506

sad sad ... no luck for this chruncher so far..... devilish

I'll just keep my CPU's smoking... cool

Re: Problem!

Well thanks for the input everyone. I guess I'll just keep chipping away at this packet. See what happens?
