This is my first post here, so sorry if this is in the wrong place. I was just thinking that with all the terrible problems that Malaria causes, maybe the WCG can come up with something to help (or the Universities in alliance as I'm not sure as to how things work here). I read the recent article about Malaria in the National Geographic, and it is extremely serious, and with everything that we are doing to help with other diseases, there is so much more we could do. The main problem is that as we come up with antibiotics to get rid of it, the Malaria only improves as it's just too clever for us. Millions are dying.

Anything we can to do help? There is another BOINC malaria project elsewhere investigating the swarming habits of mosquitoes to determine how to catch them. We've got another type of cancer project coming here as well as a dengue fever project. Many conclusions for one disease can be used to fight others by using similar methods.

Hello dogleish,
Anything we can to do help? Some of the proteins we crunched in HPF1 were malaria proteins. In general, we try to be an available charitable utility for projects that benefit humanity. Other people develop the projects, then we run them for free if they meet our criteria. Lawrence |

Heres the Link..
----------------------------------------malariacontrol.net What is malariacontrol.net? The malariacontrol.net project is an application that makes use of network computing for stochastic modelling of the clinical epidemiology and natural history of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. What ever that means... Of course theres DDT, a weapon of mass surviv... lives here. Hello U.N.?? ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 6, 2007 1:56:47 AM] |

DDT was tried from 1944 to 1972, when it started to give the workers toxic signs and production tailed off. You could not even buy a DDT anti-louse shampoo after that.

Hi haldav,
If you use Google, I think that you will find that WHO is now advocating use of DDT for medical purposes to protect humans. It is mass agricultural use that is still disapproved. Lawrence |

Hi, Lawrence'
True, in the 28 years of DDT, it did not kill as many people as malaria might have done had DDT not been used, but it is still contraversial;see: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6083944 |

Here are some articles in Science Daily investigating ways to develop strains of mosquitoes that do NOT spread malaria:

Here's an interesting post by Dr. R. Bonneau, chief scientist, touching on the current crunching done with HPF2 related to malaria:
