Hey folks, I setup my new computer 3 days ago and installed the Grid system to run the FightAids@home. For the first two days it ran fine, giving fast results and crunching fast. Ever since last night I've been getting error messages. After my latest result it now says 'Unable to process Task Data. Backing off'. Every so often it'll try to connect and get some data, only to fail again. I deleted the program and reinstalled it and it seemed to work only until my next restart and it's the same thing. My other computer is running the data fine (older AMD X2 chip with WinXP works fine, but this Vista x64 doesn't want to run).
Specs are Vista Ultimate AMD 4800+ 4GB Ram Plenty of HD space. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help. |

There are several Vista concerns and solutions here:
----------------------------------------https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856 One simple fix (maybe not for that) for Vista users is to install the WCG program and BOINC if you are going that way, in a separate directory, not the default program directory that it picks for you. Security is less of a hassle. This should also be run in a 32bit partition. It's not set up net for native 64bit computing since there wasn't enough of a difference noted to make it worth the effort so far to convert it.

Hi TMaG82,
----------------------------------------It's the question of the day, week, quarter and who knows for as long as Vista will exists, it working for a while and then suddenly not is. Let us know which one of the items in the FAQ provided solution and insert [Completed] in your opening post title (little pencil left of title for editing), if we can consider the case as closed. cheers

Hi TMaG82,
Delete the program. Next install Boinc for windows Vista 64. They just officially relased it to the public. If you use or log on as administrator all the time use the default settings during instillation. If you log on using the more secure user account, be sure to check the box during instillation that gives all users control over the program. Then when you start the program from the start menu be sure to right click it and run it as administrator. Everthing should be fine. P.S. During instillation don't take them up on their offer to start it each time you log in on the computer. Always start it your self. |

We do NOT recommend to always run as administrator, but you CAN give a user Administrator rights authority to the BOINC directory structure.
----------------------------------------As for the 64bit release, WCG is as yet NOT recommending the use of any 5.10 clients in production. All WCG sciences are 32 bit and will likely be for a longer while, thus no benefit at all in gained from it unless you run also projects elsewhere that have 64bit science apps. FWIW 5.10.7 was retracted and for all windows and linux version 5.10.8 Development version (WinXP64+) (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING)

They have relased the 64 bit version of Bionic to the public. If you have a 64 bit machine it defaults to this version when you hit the download button. And it loads world community grid work imiedietely, upon signing up. And here is a quote from one of their administrators.

Notes: · NOTE: BOINC may NOT start at startup if you are running Windows Defender (WinXP, WinXPx64, WinVista, WinVistax64). This issue should be resolved in a future version of BOINC. In order to have BOINC start automatically you'll need to install as a service. On Vista the user account will need to have administrative access to the system. · See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/linuxx64.php for details on running BOINC on Linuxx64. Thanks to everyone who tested and logged bugs in this release. We have another good release. |

That release has been withdrawn. It was unstable.

Hi Todd2052
----------------------------------------We, the CA's, don't give advises here on the forum for the heck of it. The general download page was updated and except for the MAC version were all reverted to ' (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING)'. Not sure what your Linux link bears in relation to the Vista which was the topic, but here the word from the Berkeley Project Administrator: Ageless Forum moderator Project administrator: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1908 http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1909 5.8.16 is the best new version again, since 5.10.x showed problems. Please, when quoting posts, make sure to put the hyperlink in, because the reversing post was right after your quotation in 1908 and at the end of 1909! http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1909&nowrap=true#11409 cheers
