Thanks to our members for their generous contribution to the Genome Comparison project which is very near completion. This weekend we expect to see the steady outflow of work units on this project go down to a trickle as we finish the last remaining batches of work. Within about 3 weeks, all of the final results should be in and returned to the researchers and at that time no further work units will need to be sent for this phase of the project. However, there may be some future point in time at which we revive this project when more sequenced genes become available for comparison.
We will soon be sending a news email about this project's completion along with news about other recent project completions and provide more information about future projects launching soon on World Community Grid. Some of you who have set your preferences to only contribute to this project will find that your agent may go into a paused state. If that is the case, we encourage you to change your settings to contribute to the other projects. At some point we may reset the preferences for users contributing only to the Genome Comparison project back to the default of contributing to all projects, so that their agents do not become totally idle. The researchers will be providing more information about this project's results soon. Thank you again for your spare computer cycles which have made this project possible! |

There was a newsletter sent out on June 18. Is it sitting in your SPAM folder?
----------------------------------------Cancer, Dengue Fever and Climate Prediction are coming up in the next few months. After scientists for HCMD1 make their changes, we could see HCMD phase 2 early next year. I'm afraid that you can always stay busy.

I'm running units fast enough that my computer may be used to finish the Genome project -- at least I hope so. That'll keep me busy for a few more days on a smoothly running series.
----------------------------------------I tried the Cancer project when I first installed BOINC (had UD prior to that) and found it to be a real facility hog. Had to drop it like a hot potato. I found the Genome project to be a perfect fit between my normal use of the computer and being able to help on these projects. I'm interested in the Climate project as long as it involves "real" science and not a bunch of "Politically Correct Man Is Responsible For The Impending End Of The Earth" crap! Also, if it doesn't turn out to be a resource hog. I guess it's now somewhat of a game of "Wait and See." ![]() "Everything in moderation, including moderation" -- Mark Twain |

My guess is the climate project won't be particularly lightweight. It is going to involve global climate models as input, detailed local weather profiles, and high resolution climate modelling. I won't steal the scientists' thunder by giving you all the fine details, but the project is designed to save lives in the short term, rather than engaging in all that doom and gloom hypersensationalism that the media has been revelling in so much of late.
So, based on other climate projects out there, (and this is a pure guess) - our climate project will need some serious resources. And as for the politics - WCG aren't afraid of that. We run an AIDS project here, after all. On rare occasions, bigoted people have shared their personal views on AIDS and homosexuality (and let's not forget the conspiracy theories!). We can't change perceptions all at once. People with personal or political objections to a particular WCG project should simply opt out of it. I'm sure we are going to have more discussions about global warming and climate change (even without the project). There is so much misinformation out there, and the issue has been politicised to such a degree that I feel debating the actual science behind the opinions is important. |

I found the Genome project to be a perfect fit between my normal use of the computer and being able to help on these projects. This will be a little different Cancer Project than the other one, which was scanning tissue samples. I would investigate each new project that comes since resources may be different. Some have even been tweaked a bit after they started. Yes, FGC was a great project for small computers and quickly running workunits.Phase 1 of HCMD just finished on UD only. When phase 2 starts next year including BOINC, resources could be completely different since the program will probably be changed.

We run an AIDS project here, after all. On rare occasions, bigoted people have shared their personal views on AIDS and homosexuality.... Easy on the "bigoted" comments (unless you are prejudiced against heterosexual people). I've seen a few - very few - remarks about AIDS and gays, queers, faggots, etc. (see where calling people "bigoted" can lead? Could your remark(s) be construed as anti-heterosexual?). Although I have my own personal views about that subject I have run the FAH project because I feel that it's possible that the knowledge gained from FAH may have uses in other medical applications also. ![]() |
