Hi,
My problem is a little bit complicated. Here is the situation. I have two computer, let say A and B. A is connected to the internet and B is not and there is no way I can connect it to the internet. I have two devices, one for A and one for B and the method I was using for B was working for the past two years: I store the World Community grid directory on an USB key, copy it to computer A, launch it on computer A to download a new wu. then store it again on the USB key, copy it to computer B. I let it run on computer B and then when the work is finished, store it again on the key, transfer it to A to send the result and receive a new wu. As I said, this process worked well for the past two years. But now, once I launch my grid agent on B, it works for two seconds and then want to send the results immédiately. If I copy and launch it on computer A, it immédiately download a new wu. But same problem when I copy and launch again on computer B. I have no internet, so no antivirus & firewall on B and there is no problem with system requirements as it was working for the past two years. Can someone help me? |

Hi Gordon24,
----------------------------------------You do the so called Sneakernet approach, which should work fine if applied rigorously. Now secrecy aside, and tell us the details of computer B (OS, CPU, RAM Size, Free HD space) and have you done any hardware testing on it. How do you keep the OS up to date? I'm sure u do, but you exit the agents at all times before the copying and you never run the agent from the USB key as many are too slow to keep up and could damage the work unit (The USB key could wear out quick too). computer B is a P4 2.66ghz with 512Mo Ram and 20Go of free space on the hard disk.
system is Windows Xp pro with SP1. And of course, I copy my wu from th usb key to the hard disk before launching UD. In fact, I use the usb key only to swap the wu from comp B to comp A and vice-versa. As I said, I changed nothing on computer B and it was working this way for almost two years using only fighting aids wu. I tried to created a new device, I try to use Genome wu but problem is the same. If I launch the wu on computer A, it works perfectly. But as soon as swap it to computer B, it runs for two seconds then want to send results. |

.... that makes the next step as going for some good hardware testing. See Useful Utilities post in Start Here forum for the good ones. Memtest86 comes to mind as a first step.

He doesn't say which system he is using. The UD.EXE version works very well for sneakernetting between two or more computers.
----------------------------------------I had problems testing the same approach using BOINC. The registry and CPU time on the different systems caused all sorts of complications.

My first thought would be a stick of ram going bad. memtest is a good way to test that.
----------------------------------------If that passes I would think maybe the processor or power supply are going flaky. Edit: BurnIn Test is a nice utility that can test everything for you at once in a nice Windows GUI. I think the trial software only runs for something like 15 min, but if your computer is stopping after only a couple of min that might be enough time to find what is giving the errors. I have BIT Pro 4.0 and it works great. Stress tested my sister-in-laws new Vista laptop with it for several hours over the weekend with successful results. Hope this helps! hi joneill003.... i tend to forget about my extreme poor inglese.... yours made it the 3rd response in the short thread to mention hardware testing. Trust this time it catches on ;>)
----------------------------------------.... and have you done any hardware testing on it? Re: UD agent won't work and go to pause immédiately. .... that makes the next step as going for some good hardware testing. See Useful Utilities post in Start Here forum for the good ones. Memtest86 comes to mind as a first step. But now I realize an obscure part in one post of gordon24 where he speaks of swapping the work unit.... And of course, I copy my wu from th usb key to the hard disk before launching UD. In fact, I use the usb key only to swap the wu from comp B to comp A and vice-versa. I hope he copies the complete UD agent directory and subs every time.?!?

I hope he copies the complete UD agent directory and subs every time.?!? Of course, I copy the entire World Community Grid directory, including all the sub directories. As I said, I use the exact same method during more than one year and it worked perfectly. I also ran a memtest for more than 20 minutes without any errors. could it be that now, wus tests that an internet connection is active? |

I'm just thinking that if gordon24 (sorry gordon24, not a Jeff Gordon fan at all, Earnhardt Sr. and Tony Stewart all the way) has been doing this for 2 years with no problems until now, something in the machine is going flaky.
So maybe a necessary file is not getting copied to the USB drive and thus to computer b? PS sorry for going off topic on the Nascar subject. Hopefully nobody gets angry ![]() |
