WCG has seen waves of successful registrations due to highly user interactive websites (such as forums) introducing its readerbase to the idea. If WCG could set developers on harnessing the powers of social networking sites, results could be astounding.
----------------------------------------Facebook allows users to write "Applications" which can be embedded into user's profile pages, also known as that user's "wall". If we could have this Application pull statistics about our WCG Team, and our own personal contributions - it could entice many, many more people to sign up. In fact, the more dynamic the experience, the more enticing it is for users to join. (I.e: if users could assign team logos, etc etc) Facebook also has a "Causes" Application, which has a number of nonprofits and organizations listed - such as the World Wildlife Fund, the Richard Dawkins Foundation, and so on. In fact, a user has created a World Community Grid "Cause", but because it hasn't been presented as an Application, the response has been minimal. http://apps.facebook.com/causes/view_cause/1060 A good place to start this project would be at Facebook's developer blog, which is quite a fun read. http://blog.facebook.com/ Is there any interest in chasing this opportunity? |

I had a look at this. The "Causes" application is fairly limited, and it can't be extended to include all the WCG stuff. A WCG application would have to be separate to the Causes application.
One of the WCG techs has already created WCG profiles at various social networking sites. So, is there anyone out there already familiar with writing Facebook applications? |

You are right, the Application would be separate / supplement the Causes.
----------------------------------------I can't say I'm much of a programmer, though I sport a Computer Science background. I'm in medical school now. It would be fantastic if someone could pick up the ball with this. Here's another fantastic resource put out by the folks at facebook that I overlooked: http://developers.facebook.com/ |
