Re: Deferring communication for longer than normal

Sekerob, I apologize for the cost of hitting that update button blushing LOL

I have been sooooo good in not doing it and letting the scheduler do it, that I felt guilty even doing it as an experiment as per my last post!

I am mooving over into the area of non-concern over this and going to ignore the deferred comm. times :-) and really appreciate the abilities of the scheduler even more!

Thanks guys so much for all your help rose

Have an awesome day!!

Re: Deferring communication for longer than normal

My analysis and suppositions: In past the user never knew for sure when the next scheduled contact with the servers would be, causing the urge in many to hit that Update button over and over again at the cited 15 USD virtual cost per pop. Now the scheduler tells you and starts as with the familiar 5 minute defer run a count down in the Projects tab. This would be the very latest the scheduler would send Result Files and 'Ready to Report" tasks up and maybe fetch more work (long as you keep on crunching). Now anyone on a strong points diet is basically told to back off and save WCG to open the various databases.

Enjoy this new feature, which given the 5.8.16 and 5.10.7 appearances is most likely a server side added boon. Chapeau to the Technicians for this great now comfort zone addition.

I actually like the longer deferrals. I just wondered if my box was acting up, but since others are experiencing this as well, I am fine with it. And if it helps with the database servers, that's even better. It bothered me seeing when my buffer dropped below 48 hours, boinc would report 1 task and receive 1 task on each request. I used to allow boinc network access for only 5 hours a day to ease the load on the servers. But if this is going to be the norm, I will have network access on 24/7 as the server can set it's frequency of connection.

No wonder I couldn't get to the server. biggrin Somebody had it tied up.

If updating manually, I have good luck in waiting for at least two workunits that needed reporting. That stretches the time out to the non-complaint range.

I lost my second phone line on Friday due to the heavy rain over the last week. With 4 computers round-robin on the same phone line at the moment, I have to update manually at different times, plus leave phone time open for regular calls, like from call centers in India. The last one was named "Michael Jackson". Yeah, right. I'm guessing Vrindiban+.

Re: Deferring communication for longer than normal

I've been having this problem on my machines also. No telling how much work has been delayed due to this glitch.......

Re: Deferring communication for longer than normal

It's not a glitch, it tells the users when the next scheduled contact is! The reasoning is explained above. You should have enough work buffered until that time and if not (due to e.g. faster processing), the client will (should) adapt and contact the servers to fetch new work and report the results / "ready to report" tasks.
