Poor Pluto gets no respect.

Not only has it been demoted from planet to "dwarf planet", research now shows that it cannot even lay claim to being the biggest of these.

Re: Poor Pluto gets no respect.

My 5 year old came home from kindergarten class recently and we were discussing the planets and solar system that he had learned about that day in class. He had brought home a book from the library and as I was reading through the book and looking through the pictures I noticed that the solar system stopped at Neptune.
I said more to myself than to my son "Hey, they forgot Pluto!". My son then answered stating "Dad, Pluto isn't a planet anymore, it's a moon."
I told him that since Pluto was a planet when I was in school, it's still a planet to me biggrin

Obviously, the great-grandchildren of 19th century Indiana legislators are now in control of the Illinois legislature. (For those that don't get the reference, the Indiana legislature tried to pass a law in 1897 declaring the value of Pi to be 3.2). More information.

Re: Poor Pluto gets no respect.

Finally, New Horizons flew by Pluto after more than 9 years swerving around our solar system and on the go visit 4 other planets. As the first close-ups reveal, it's very 'planet shaped ;D

Oh, and it's bigger than until now thought... maybe full planet reinstatement is in order ;P

Well the new measurements show that PLUTO is the biggest.
I refer to this:

""[July 13] In a late-day announcement on Monday, astronomer Alan Stern – who is New Horizons principal investigator – said measurements by New Horizons in the past few days have now confirmed that Pluto is the biggest object in the Kuiper Belt beyond planet Neptune. Pluto measures 1,473 miles (2,370 km) in diameter. Other comparably sized bodies Kuiper Belt bodies – for example, Haumea, Makemake and Eris – had at various times been contenders for the biggest Kuiper belt object title, but now … Pluto wins!""

I told him that since Pluto was a planet when I was in school, it's still a planet to me

Pluto was first a far out Planet (Feb 18, 1930) and latter (September 1930) a far out Dog. As a child I met them in the opposite order.
Pluto Resolved Thanks to New Horizons et al.

Re: Poor Pluto gets no respect.

If 'The Donald' becomes POTUS is it than official the USA is really a Pluto-cracy ;? , but seriously, more pictures from Pluto and it's smaller moons, more high ice-bergs, maybe as high as the thickest ice sheets on the Antarctic. [15700ft, 4.8km]. That high as iceberg is not possible... gravity would tear that down, ice being morphic it would just spread out, or the weight would cause cause the earths crust to subside.
