Hi Vitaly,
----------------------------------------Don't know WinXP SP3 unless this is the 3rd party Service pack assembled with all the known patches and fixes. Cycling is a problem and has a number of sources, mainly in the security software department (Antispam, Windows Defender, DEP, Software Firewall and Antivirus). You "say some time ago".... does that mean it's over or have you not been crunching (cant check as the Statistics are presently being updated). Did it work before? The way to find out is to try and install BOINC. If you have a dual-core machine it will double production too. Let us know about the security features you have in place and version anyway, as we're interested to know

Hi Vitaly, >Don't know WinXP SP3 unless this is the 3rd party Service pack >assembled with all the known patches and fixes. You are quite right. SP2 >Cycling is a problem and has a number of sources, mainly in the >security software department (Antispam, Windows Defender, DEP, >Software Firewall and Antivirus). When I use agent with Kaspersky AV it can't connect to server. When I close Kaspersky I have problem with download. Also I close ZoneAlarm. After that (when I close ZA and KAV) I check process window. >You "say some time ago".... does that mean it's over or have you not >been crunching (cant check as the Statistics are presently being >updated). Did it work before? The way to find out is to try and install >BOINC. If you have a dual-core machine it will double production too. Statistic info stay constant. Now I install BOINC and try it. >Let us know about the security features you have in place and version >anyway, as we're interested to know Athlon 64 3000, 1Gb RAM WinXP SP2 Kaspersky AV 5.0 or 6.0 ZoneAlarm 6.5 Free Thank you. |

Hello Vitaly Tokarenko,
My guess is that your problem is caused by Kaspersky. It has a history of working with our UD client, then a revision will stop working, then a later revision will start working again. We recommend downloading BOINC and uninstalling UD. It is the easiest solution. Just register the new installation to your old member name and keep on crunching. Lawrence |

Hi Vitaly,
----------------------------------------Yes, see now that you have not been able to return work units for a while. Did you install or upgrade Zone Alarm at the time? It's a regularly reported problem area. You need to set exceptions in ZA as follows: A. Add UD.exe and UD_12345678.exe, where 12345678 is the science number that changes with each project), so look in the Agents, Projects Versions and Processes (in Start Here forum), to find the number. e.g. Genome Comparison has number UD_13187598.exe Since you are going to try and migrate to BOINC, set ZA:
Like Lawrence notes, Kaspersky is also a regular problem Antivirus program. The test is again to Switch it off and see if things start working. Sometimes a complete uninstall and boot is required to get things going again. There are other good AV programs like Avast and AVG that are for free on top and are known not to be problematic with either UD or BOINC agent. The test to see if ZA is the problem is of course like you mentioned to switch it off, but sometimes even an uninstall & boot is required. Try though the settings above first. Also upgrade if you want as 7.0 is out: http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html

Sek,
I have been observing a similar problem on three of my agents during the last 24 hours. Two of the agents are on my home network and one is at work in a completely different location. In each case the selected project was Proteome Folding, and I had the message about "Something in your computer is making the application repeatedly crash". On each machine I started the agent off again and it stopped after approximately 20 seconds of processing and then downloaded a new (large) load of data. After that, each machine has been working normally. I'll check all my other agents later today and report again if any more have been affected. David. |

david,
----------------------------------------The Italian Job - III, send from Russia with Love, may have knee-jerked a few AV program definition updates with one or the other maker. It's all too coincidental for multiple locations. I've disconnected my Clients as I'm in .... Got 5 days buffer presently (30 odd HPF2 jobs including), so let the storm ride. My connection was remotely reset many times by the ISP in last 72 hours. The ISP is BIG in capitals, so they're bound to host a few of the victims. Let us know if it persists

Further to my earlier post,
I've only just been able to check my other agents and I discovered seven of them had hung up with the "something is making your computer repeatedly crash" message. All were crunching HPF2 project. It might be significant that all these machines were also waiting to install the latest crop of Windows updates (although other machines running other projects weren't affected). Having installed the updates and re-started the agents they all seem happy again. I have a suspicion that when updates are pending they sometimes also interfere with the proper operation of scheduled hibernation. At these times the machines sometimes go into suspend mode instead of hibernation, and sometimes they just ignore the scheduled hibernation event. Perhaps I ought to try going back to automatic installation of Windows Updates, but in general I prefer to do such things manually. David. |

David,
----------------------------------------Sharing that thought, where files that are in use are not updated until booting and those not, are being applied creating an unstable environment. All my machines are set to only download _when I want _, but not apply until given the go, _by me_! Have though never found the 'partial' update to interfere with a manual hibernation and resume. Sometimes let it sit for days without adverse effect, just the yellow shield sitting in the systray ![]() cheers and thanks for the insight and observations. Sekerob

It's conceivable, I suppose - although I've not observed anything similar myself.
There is quite a lot involved with updating - the BITS service (oops, tautology!), the update service itself, and the installer service doing the actual work. In theory, none of them should interfere with hibernation. And in theory, hibernation shouldn't interfere with crunching. Isn't theory great? Do you want to pursue this issue further, or are you happy to migrate to BOINC and see how it goes? |
