....oh, and I forgot to tell you....owing to the Military involvement in this project you cannot remove the software....it has now taken over control of your machine without you knowing...(you only THINK it has been removed). Your machine is now working on mind control drugs to control the world population under military domination!!!
----------------------------------------The ONLY way to remove the software is to removed your hard drive, burn it in a furnace and buy another one....sorry, you have been taken over!! ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 18, 2007 6:24:12 AM] |

hi hypotaxis,
----------------------------------------About Us Our Mission, Our Work and You World Community Grid's mission is to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity. Our work has developed the technical infrastructure that serves as the grid's foundation for scientific research. Our success depends upon individuals collectively contributing their unused computer time to change the world for the better. World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community. Look for upcoming publications from the recently finished Help Defeat Cancer and Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy, phase I. Project scientists have already posted intermediate observations and findings on their websites and made acknowledgements there or here on the fora. Thing is, each project is eclectic at WCG, you can run Cancer Research or Muscular Dystrophy. Opposed to your tax dollars going in a big pot and divvied out without immediate control of the tax payer, your computer cycles can be directed towards research you 'can' be convinced of, is strictly humanitarian. That's your choice.
WCG

Personally, I would be overjoyed if all military money was spent on basic research, not more guns or some daft weapons system. Universities get funding where they can. It's not nice, but until science is funded properly - what can you do? Using it as an excuse to ignore WCG is not going to change anything, that much is certain.

While staying on La Palma island in the canaries I once wanted to visit the famous astronomical facilities of the Roque de los muchachos. The site is comparable to Mauna Kea or La Silla observatories.
When I got atop of the mountain with its splendid view over the atlantic there was literally nothing for the public to visit. They even do not respond to emails when asked about visitor programs. The difference is: The billions of Euros spent in these facilities are 100% public money which is not a bad thing for itself. Except they don't feel being accountable to tax-paying european citizens. .. WCG doesn't cost much and paradoxically there is a good deal of information availiable. |

They are also spending money investigating whether La Palma will slide into the sea. ... might as well cover all eventualities.

Precisely. It doesn't make sense in either sense. It's from the same root, of course, and it almost certainly shows up in various forms in all the Romance languages. But since I'm not multilingual, we'll have to wait for Sek to comment on that.
