You should be able to configure ZA to ignore BOINC even when in lockdown mode. You will have to grant exceptions to boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe, boinccmd.exe and boinc.scr. It has been some time since I quit using ZA so I don't remember the exact commands. The new 5.10.x version of BOINC (when released) should handle this more gracefully, however it still may not be able to do any processing while ZA is in lockdown mode. You're thinking of the pass-lock feature. I have that enabled for some programs - including boinc - but pretty sure that only applies to when you have ZA set up to block internet activity when machine has been idle for some period of time. Thanks for your comments - maybe YOU should be a CA. ![]() ![]() |

If you want to be sarcastic about my lack of motivation, why don't you have oh, let's say about 25% of your cerebral cortex removed and see how you make out. If you'd been through what I have you'd either be dead or in persistent vegatative state. I survived and even managed to get 2 graduate degrees and have 3 careers before the brain damage finally won the battle. twilyth, please don't label yourself as an invalid. If the brain damage won you wouldn't be here. lol ![]() Diana G. ![]() |

twilyth, please don't label yourself as an invalid. If the brain damage won you wouldn't be here. lol As a cinematic sage once said (Dirty Harry) - "A man's gotta know his limitations". I denied mine for a long time, but eventually it becomes a little like denying the weather - if it's raining, you're still going to get wet - regardless of how positive your attitude might be. But thank you for the thought. So this isn't completely off topic, I posted a request to the boinc development forum regarding the RPC's. I'll report back when I get a response. ![]() ![]() |

Well, so much for friendly user support from the boinc crew.
----------------------------------------Here's the response to my question about why boinc uses RPC's What is a more conventional method to use when you try to run BOINC on one computer and track what it is doing with Boinc Manager on another computer? RPCs are very useful for that. What is even a more conventional method on a single machine? Big bulky programming, using lots of external APIs? Windows only? But, since BOINC isn't using the internet for those connections, it's more of a ZA problem, isn't it? So work arounds are: Install BOINC as a service and only use the Manager when you need to check on it. Although I read somewhere (can't remember where exactly) that you can set BOINC's parts in the exclusion zone in ZA these days. Then it won't register on ZA's system tray icon. I'm sure someone else can explain that. You can read the thread at Why does core client use RPC for communication? ![]() ![]() |

I'm sorry to say it, but - that's pretty much my opinion, too.
Like I said, RPC's a requirement. If you want to work around it, that's fine - I'm sure ZA has settings for it. The only problem, in fact, is the freezing you report. Now, I can't duplicate that - so I don't know whether it has been fixed in the beta release I'm using right now, or whether I haven't triggered the freeze correctly. Either way, I suggest you don't worry about it. If you try it again with the next release (it's feature complete now, so I don't think something like this will be looked at for 5.10) then I'll help get it fixed for 6.0. Deal? Personally, I think a network suspend feature is a waste of space. If you have malware, then it will have disabled Zone Alarm already. If you don't have malware, what good does the feature do? And one final explanation: the RPC communication on a standard installation is purely local. But one of the advantages of this system is you can also control remote BOINC clients using the same mechanism. However, doing that requires a significant amount of authentication and firewall setup. |

Like I said, RPC's a requirement. If you want to work around it, that's fine - I'm sure ZA has settings for it. The "stop" button stops ALL traffic - even for trusted programs. I'm new to Zone Alarm, but I'm fairly sure that's how it works. If it didn't, it would be a pointless feature. Therefore, almost by definition, there's no way around it - which is precisely what you want - you WANT to stop ALL network traffic - no exceptions. The only problem, in fact, is the freezing you report. Now, I can't duplicate that - so I don't know whether it has been fixed in the beta release I'm using right now, or whether I haven't triggered the freeze correctly. Thanks for trying, but if you're not using the latest version of ZA security suite it probably won't be a fair test. Other firewalls let stuff slide that ZA won't - to me, that's a GOOD THING.Either way, I suggest you don't worry about it. If you try it again with the next release (it's feature complete now, so I don't think something like this will be looked at for 5.10) then I'll help get it fixed for 6.0. Deal? I appreciate the offer but I'm starting to feel like a punching bag. I don't get snotty with people unless they dis me first. You guys seem to do it pre-emptively. You're not as bad as some of your collegues but if you expect members to be civil, providing a good example would be an excellent place to start.I had written a short article about distributed computing in general and WCG in particular that I was going to send to my local paper ("local" being a paper with a circulation of well over 50,000). The one letter I had submitted a couple years ago was published. I have no intention of promoting any DC project at this point since I don't think that average people trying to do something charitable should have to endure any of the abuse or inconvenience that the people here at WCG thinks should be de riguer. I can just imagine someone who is only passably computer literate having to deal with some of the crap I see here. Personally, I think a network suspend feature is a waste of space. If you have malware, then it will have disabled Zone Alarm already. If you don't have malware, what good does the feature do? I'm not an expert on ZA internals, but any decent firewall is able to insure it has not been tampered with, so unless you have some reason to believe otherwise, this is not a valid point. And one final explanation: the RPC communication on a standard installation is purely local. But one of the advantages of this system is you can also control remote BOINC clients using the same mechanism. However, doing that requires a significant amount of authentication and firewall setup. So why not have a paired down version of the manager that ONLY runs locally and doesn't HAVE to use RPC's? It might be a little extra work for the developers, but taking stuff out of a program is rarely as difficult as putting it in. You know, on second thought, don't even bother answering that - god forbid that the poor developers should have to even pretend that boinc is anything that resembles a professional, commercial piece of software.![]() ![]() |

The only abuse I see is your abuse of the BOINC developers, and impoliteness on the BOINC forums. Please abide by the forum rules, both there and here.
Since this is not a bug, please drop the issue. |

I'm not the one who has been abusive - I was simply responding in kind and will continue to do so. If you think you can censure me, guess again. I'll say whatever I think is appropriate - the fact that YOU may not like it is IRRELEVANT. Think you can have me banned? I'll match every example of sarcasm on my part with 10 from you and your cronies. Go ahead - make my day! ![]() ![]() |

With respect to what RPC does within and outside of the PC in the context of BOINC, here a description from the BOINC FAQ: http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?view=...255d1bc7393d932d9aba450b7
----------------------------------------Remote Procedure Call From Wikipedia: Remote procedure call is a technology that allows a computer program to cause a subroutine or procedure to execute in another address space - commonly on another computer, without the programmer explicitly coding the details for this remote interaction. That is, the programmer would write essentially the same code whether the subroutine is local to the executing program, or remote. It's also used to allow BOINC to communicate with its different parts (daemon, GUI, screen saver) on localhost. The computer's firewall needs to approve of this. In the past port 1043 needed to be opened, but given that gave conflicts, the port requirement was reassigned to 31416. Rom Walton, one of the BOINC programmers published a good article on the operational deployment of the RPC protocol: BOINC Client Communications Infrastructure The link at the bottom of the article is broken, but if scrolling up you find it right above with the name: BOINC Client Communication Infrastructure, Part II Strictly for the technically interested, so be warned.
