Hi,
I'm sort of a noob to wcg and totally noob to boinc. I have what is more of a curiosity than anything actually bugging me. Since I just dropped the grid client and went to boinc for wcg, there is a constant minor network traffic on all my machines. Is this due to trickle running on wcg or is it something else? Not a biggie, just wondered. Thanks for your time. Mikey |

Hi Mikey
----------------------------------------Can you describe what tool you see the traffic with.... the firewall maybe or is it actual outgoing which at all times is recorded in the message log? Very probable what you see is the RPC talk over localhost/port 31416 over which the 3 parts of BOINC talk with each other. One of them is known as the 'Heartbeat'. Go discover BOINCview (3rd party), and you will be able to monitor all your machines from 1 display, simultaneous. That will create a little LAN traffic. Sekerob (sometimes I use DUmeter, but mostly just watch the little systray icon of the wifi, to identify real out/inbounds.)

I know BOINC manager communicates with the BOINC client over TC/IP protocols, maybe that's what you are seeing? Also, if you are using BOINCview or something similar to monitor your farm, that will generate constant traffic as well. As for actual traffic to the internet, that should only happen during uploading, downloading or reporting work units.

Here is one way to prove that the traffic is not BOINC. In the advanced view, activity tab, you can suspend network activity. BOINC workunits will continue to run, but they will stack up and not ask for uploads/downloads. Change it back to network activity before they are done, as the queue could totally empty and the computer just sit there inactive.
----------------------------------------I see other network activity this morning. This was another major Microsoft Tuesday "restart your windows day". It is sending some OS downloads to my computers.

However, when I exit boinc, it does. Que pasa? |

I have only installed the clients on three computers, no managerial software. The cooling fan on the laptop pulses in time with the network activity. I thought that was interesting. I am seeing the activity with Zone Alarm firewall. When I exit boinc, it goes back to the Z display from the dancing bar graphs.

What do you have the BOINC throttle set to? That is the usual cause for odd fan behaviour. It is (in my opinion) a poor throttle design.
Can you check what ports the network activity is on? I believe Zone Alarm can log this for you. You should see activity on port 31416 from localhost to localhost. |

D., It does, that's why i asked. My
----------------------------------------Added: even trained the firewall to not log and not monitor the localhost stuff.... saves cycles.

Another way to check the activity is to go to a Command/DOS prompt and type netstat -a You will then see that it is probably just the port 31416 activity needed on the loopback for BOINC and the app etc to work as mentioned above. Try it again after exiting BOINC, you will see the activity has stopped and port 31416 no longer shows.
