Request for a finer profile option about use of computer.

Hello,

In my profile, I ask that my computer should not work on WCG when I'm using it. I notice that just typing on the keyboard or the touchpad isn't considered as using the computer. It annoys me because I often use my computer just for reading a web page or something else and listening to music. The CPU goes on working for WCG (with Boinc) and as a result the computer is noisy and very hot. Especially, the touchpad is hot and finger-burning.

Suggestion : I'd like another option in the profile configuration, to stop crunching activity as soon as the computer is used, even if not intensively. Otherwise, I fear I won't be able to go on making my laptop crunch for WCG and I won't be able either to recommend it to other people.

Re: Request for a finer profile option about use of computer.

Which client are you using as there are specific settings that can tell the client to not work when used and how long to wait before resuming processing? We than can also discuss the 'throttle' feature as that is different for the2 clients WCG has in use.

Nelsoc/Uplinger, please move this thread to the appropriate UD or BOINC support forum based on reply.

thanks

...he says in his post he uses Boinc, he has the same problem I had as Boinc does NOT seem to work purely as a Screensaver...which UD does and it solved my problem. The Boinc'Do not work when compter is in use is NOT the same as a screensaver as there can be a memory clash/corruption as I pointed out in my thread about it!

Re: Request for a finer profile option about use of computer.

ah yes i see. In that case the 2 settings in the BOINC profile should suffice to solve the problem without the screen-saver equation:

Processor Usage
Do work while computer is in use? No
Do work only after computer is idle for: 30 minutes (or any other interval)

to get to these options go to My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profile > Select BOINC Profile of choice. When there make changes and save, than go to BOINCmgr 'Advanced View', open the Projects tab and hit the Update button to apply the changes to the client.

The direct link to the Default profile is this: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/v...iguration.do?name=Default

...except that as I pointed out in the other thread this seemed to cause a monumental c*ock-up with memory and a game my son plays.....maybe if also un check the "leave in memory" option 'might' stop that....I have not had chance to test as all son will allow is UD agent running on screensaver.....

Scribe, let's bring your special son issues up if and when they are considered to be a part of the solution finding.

Re: Request for a finer profile option about use of computer.

In my WCG profile, I do have :
Processor Usage - Do work while computer is in use? No
I'm trying several time options, but I don't think it's the point here.

In my Boinc manager, Activity, I have :
Run : based on preferences (well, there's a problem with the 'checked' sign which doesn't appear in the manager, but I'm quite sure I clicked on this option)
Network activity : based on preferences

And it does stop as soon as I'm doing any real activity, like getting a new web page, not yet in memory. But I'd prefer it to stop as soon as I'm present, whatever I do.

Re: Request for a finer profile option about use of computer.

As far as I'm aware, BOINC should stop based on any mouse or keyboard activity. Are you saying this isn't the case?

What version of BOINC are you using?

Re: Request for a finer profile option about use of computer.

You need to attach the client to the profile that has these settings on the server. To check, have a look in the global_prefs.xml file in the BOINC directory (i hope you dont have a global_prefs_override.xml file).

<venue name="work"> (or the one you are attached to)
<run_if_user_active/>
<idle_time_to_run>30.0</idle_time_to_run>

The bolded line should not be there!!!!!! It's the equivalent of saying yes, i want to process all the time and overrides the idle_time_to_run setting!.

You are correct that unless you set the activity option to the scheduled, it wont kick in and only stop when u are really typing and mousing.
