Work Units too big

I guess they are like 3 or 4 MBs, therefore it takes me like 20 minutes to download them. It would be a lot better if they wouldn't be so big, because When I go offline after 15 minutes (that happens a lot) it starts all over again when I go online next time. Can't you decrease the size?

biggrin Re: Work Units too big

Hmmm... are you sure your comp is actually finishing a work unit? Usually, the first work unit is ~4MB, and then the ones after are ~1MB, kinda odd... on your profile, did you ever see your points go up? If it hasn't, that means that something is not exactly right... if that is the case, I suggest a reinstall of the program... I hope this helps... biggrin

I would say the average size of download that I see is about 1Mb after you have downloaded your first work unit or if there is an upgrade to the core functionality of the WU engine.

It sounds as if you are on dial up. It sounds wierd that you are getting disconnected as their should be a transfer of information happening, meaning that idle timeouts should not happen. Do you see the byte count going up at a regular interval on the main WCG screen ?

There is no way for us to decrease the size of the workunits. They are normally right around 1MB, give or take a couple of hundred KB.

The first time you download a workunit, you download some extra data which is around 765KB. This is done only once.

Also, if we make updates to the Rosetta code, you'll be downloading that update the next time you contact the server. Currently the client update is around 2MB give or take.

So, if you are contacting the server and need a client update, the download will be around 3MB. This may be what you are seeing, but we haven't updated the client in a couple of weeks.
