Hi!
My friend's child is suffering from muscular dystrophy so I'm trying to help the best I can, and part of this help is trying to crunch as much as possible of the HCMD-project. I'm running the Grid Agent on my computer at home, but I've also tried to install it at a couple of computers at work. The installation is fine but I can't get the agents to connect and fetch work units. I've spoken to one of our IT-support tech and he thinks it's the firewall and there's not much he can/wants to do. Since I'm a computer programmer I've among other stuff developed some webservices which connects with a HHTP Request (via port 80) to a "listener" at the webserver. The reason for using HTTP-request is to avoid problems with a firewall and my question is: why not use this kind of method to pass and retreive data for the Grid Agents? I don't know what kind of method the Grid Agent uses today but obvioulsy it's not going as a SOAP-request or any other "firewall-friendly" request? I took a look into the support-forum and this problem with firewalls seems to be fairly common? I'm not trying to say that this is bad programming or something, I'm just wondering if there is a reason for not using SOAP/equivalent technology? And if not, do you think it would be possible in the future to implement this? Maybe this is not the right forum for this question but I didn't really know where else to put it, please direct me if I should move it. |

It's an interesting question. The short truth is that firewalls can block all sorts of communication, even SOAP over HTTP.
Now, WCG support two different agents. If you are having trouble with the UD WCG agent, it is worth trying the BOINC agent. It's available on the download page. BOINC communicates using SSL. It uses HTTPS on port 443 (the normal port for secure connections). A properly configured firewall shouldn't have any trouble with it. UD also uses port 443, but it uses a proprietary protocol. The downside is that HCMD isn't available yet for BOINC. However, this phase of HCMD is almost over, and the next phase (when it launches; there will be a significant gap) will be available for BOINC. |

I tried installing BOINC and it did actually work! Sucess! I've also installed BOINC at home now. Thanks for the tip!
One thing I'm curious about after the switch to BOINC though are the points generated. When looking in the My grid\Result status section, I see a lot of posts in pending validation status and the claimed-points cell is for some 66 points and alike, although my computer has been crunching for 5-6 hours. When using the grid agent, 5-6 hours work would typically give a couple of hundred points... Is there a difference in calculating the points rewarded between the grid agent and BOINC or have I got it all mixed up? /Peter |

Yes. BOINC points are multiplied by 7 to equate (approximately) to UD points.
