Re: What are you watching? The movie/tv thread.

Just finishing the second season of Boston Legal on DVD waiting for The Shield to start again on our screens this week and last night watched Scorsese's remake of Infernal Affairs - The Departed.

Excellent, for once the remake was as good as the original.

And, last night I watched Kind Hearts and Coronets, one of the best Ealing comedies that can still stand out as an example to make a black comedy work.

Re: What are you watching? The movie/tv thread.

Saw Ratatouille recently. It is one of the best animations I've seen since Finding Nemo. The story is endearing and not in the least predictable - except for the happy ending of course. The graphics are extraordinary. You could watch the entire thing without sound and still be entertained.

There is also a new series on USA network called Burn Notice about a free lance intelligence operative who finds himself out of a job. It's definitely a "guy" thing - no doubt about that - but it is very well done. The 2 other main characters are an ex-IRA girlfriend and another older ex-spy who conspires with the main character - when the former is not ratting the latter out to the feds.

New episodes of Monk and Psych will debut within the week.

Re: What are you watching? The movie/tv thread.

I've been watching old episodes of Dalziel and Pascoe. This is a great show. I was able to get every episode through the 12th season. I'm up to the 10th season and it just keeps getting better. I'm still having trouble with the Yorkshire dialect though I think I've gotten most of the slang down - having watched several other British serials before this.

It's not a typical detective story in the sense that you really have no chance of knowing what's really going on until they decide to tell you. It would be more interesting if you got a few more clues and had a chance to at least make an educated guess. Even so, it's very engaging and completely unpredictable.

Re: What are you watching? The movie/tv thread.

Life on Mars (BBC) - 2 series of 8 episodes. I missed it at the time it first ran - I watched all 8 episodes of series 1 straight off on Cable replay service. Annoying that they are not showing series 2.

Dr Who / Torchwood.

"Shameless" - UK Channel 4

On the US side - sorry - not noticed much since "Startrek" (all of them) and "The X Files" - but some interesting suggestions from you good people. smile

Re: What are you watching? The movie/tv thread.

Having the opinion that the best cop show of all time was Homicide: Life on the Street, which I am still watching as the repeats continue on ITV4 I'm now about to start on The Wire by getting the first series on rented DVDs so I can see if I agree with the critics.

Otherwise, I've just watched The Page Turner a very good French film showing a chilling revenge by a beautiful young woman slighted as a child.

Re: What are you watching? The movie/tv thread.

I'm looking forward to Life on Mars. Think I have both seasons.

HLOTS is an excellent series. Watched every episode last summer. The earliest episodes are a little dated, but it's not distracting.

Recently I've finished Dalziel and Pascoe and started New Tricks. It's about an unsolved/cold case unit that is started using retired detectives. The characters are distinctive and have depth. The stories move quickly but not frantically. The conclusions aren't predictable and often are a bit unsatisfying but it only mirrors the reality of police work - you don't always get your perp.

Re: What are you watching? The movie/tv thread.

Black Book on Monday and Hero yesterday evening, the first on rented DVD and the other recorded from Channel Film 4

Both excellent films that won awards for the Dutch and Chinese directors.

Highly recommended.
