I don't know. But it seems to be a serious study. If someone knows more about the development.

Guys, this phase I is the second of / for Decrypthon. When it finishes, presumably around early July, a 4 month program tuning is following based on what's learned from phase I. Word is, that phase II will be around December and maybe later.
----------------------------------------Consider, when we started phase I it was thought that it could be done in 14 days if WCG only ran HCMD, about 2,000 CPU years. Work was added and the extreme long jobs seem to make this project phase probably end with having done 10,000-11,000 CPU years! The curve shown on the page that Heyoka and here djibeXX provided link to shows the predicted toughening of the jobs. Regrettably now it only runs on 1 core WCG(UD) agent, thus not all crunching power of the community is participating. With phase II, BOINC on multi core will share in the load. Still, it's expected that Phase II will run considerably longer, so all the processing force we can muster is needed. Sekerob

Consider, when we started phase I it was thought that it could be done in 14 days if WCG only ran HCMD, about 2,000 CPU years. Work was added and the extreme long jobs seem to make this project phase probably end with having done 10,000-11,000 CPU years! The curve shown on the page that Heyoka and here djibeXX provided link to shows the predicted toughening of the jobs. There are 3 reasons for this. They have done the first tests and estimations on Grid 5000 (the Decrypthon Grid in 9 sites France wide). But the computers of Grid5000 are more powerful than the computers on WorldCommunityGrid. They can not use optimizations on the UD Agent (SSE, SSE2, SSE3,…), on Boinc it will be possible. Certain results are calculated several times on World Community Grid (Client error, report after the deadline), it is not the case on Grid5000 consequence Decrypthon estimate for 100% : 14 century, 88 years and 237 day of computation World Community Grid estimate for 100% : 103 century 1 year of Grid5000 calculation = 7 years of World Community Grid calculation Vous remarquerez certainement que les statistiques issues du WorldCommunityGrid montrent que le projet a déjà consommé plus de 71 siècles de temps CPU. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at May 23, 2007 3:29:41 PM] |

The initial estimates was based on WCG work-units run on the PC reference machines in the WCG test set-up and considering the standard distribution set of quorum 3. This is why it was run very low distribution priority when started in December '06, because fear existed that the project would be finished before the full press announcement on January 22.'07.... see post explanation of bbover3, the WCG admin: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=11145#83845
----------------------------------------What was only later evident was the ever increasing lengths of the work units. Now with that curve recently published it became obvious to the public, that not all relevant information was on hand when the initial estimate was made. As for optimisation, not knowing if WCG will expand the Homogeneous Redundancy (HR) to ensure that quorums will run on equally fitted CPU's i.e. 3 copies going to 3 CPU's with e.g. SSE3. Presently the only check is to see if all copies go to e.g. Windows. That feature anyway only works on clients from BOINC 5.8.x. If the project is to run on both BOINC the old WCG(UD) agent, I have my doubts anything in terms of Special CPU features will be used i.e. optimization. Possibly Viktors or an other WCG technician/programmer could touch on that. As for me/us, the volunteer crunchers, Decrypthon has not been very forthcoming in providing progress info to the donators at WCG beyond a quite hidden French language site. I understand it, but not many outside of France do. So here it is, 2,000 CPU years turning 10,000+.... lets crunch on so the scientists can start their program update soonest and launch preferably before 2008.... time is ticking. Sekerob

i have no problem with long work units. just checking to see if the progress chart is accurate based on the total estimated work volume, that's all

Just posted in backroom of CA's - Only Effects those running WCG(UD) Agent crunshers!
----------------------------------------Hey Guys, HCMD just wanted to give you the heads up, but the last batch of HCMD work will be starting very soon, about 15 minutes actually. What this means is that HCMD run time per day will decrease over the next few weeks as we clean up and wait for the results to come in. Clean up generally means that we'll send out an additional work unit for a result that was invalid or was never returned. It has been taking about 20 days for a batch to finish and I would imagine the same for these work units. Also, please note that as HCMD is finishing up, the other projects will be getting a lot more attention. So if someone shows no work, please make sure to ask them if they are running only HCMD. There may be periods where there isn't work for HCMD. -Uplinger [May 30, 2007 10:50:30 PM]

Does this mean that HCMD will soon be finished completely or are we just talking about phase I?

RKN, the answer is a few posts up in this thread when phase II is expected (probably earliest)
