I'm having trouble getting BOINC for Linux installed and can't seem to find my particular problem in these forum threads.
Have installed Ubuntu Linux and downloaded BOINC but gedit (text editor) can't open it. Error message is: "Could not open the file /home/jerydstrom/Desktop…8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh. gedit has not been able to detect the character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character coding from the menu and try again." The character coding gedit defaults to is "Current Locale (UTF-8)". I've also tried all the various "western" encodings and also the various "unicode" encodings. I really don't know what these things are but gave them a try to no avail. I'm pretty much a GUI guy, only barely minimally knowledgeable about command line entries, so I need pretty explicit instructions if I must work at that level. If I can open this file I should be OK from there - I have BOINC running on a Xandros Linux installation with no problems. Help will be most appreciated! Thanks in advance - Eric |

If you are using Ubuntu, then it is easier to install BOINC using Synaptic. Install boinc-client and boinc-manager.
Ask if you need further details! |

Your prompt reply is appreciated. I saw your instructions in one of the threads about the Synaptic Package Manager and tried that before posting; however, boinc-client and boinc-manager are not in my list of synaptics packages. I tried reloading but that did not make them appear. How do I get those pkgs into Syn Pkg Mgr or somewhere on my computer where I can execute them with a command line? Very confusing...

There are some more comprehensive instructions here: http://wiki.ubuntu-id.org/WorldCommunityGridTeamUbuntu
You need to have the "universe" repository enabled. When I installed, it was there already. |

Got the universe and installed the boinc files i needed. This is quite different from the way I've been running boinc on my Xandros linux. That is all command line - got the scripts from WCG. I'm not totally up and running with Ubuntu yet but am close. Could not have figured this out without your help. Thank you very much. Eric

This is a common error with users that are new to Linux.
----------------------------------------The file isn't executable. 1. Make sure the file is in your home directory 2. Open a konsole shell. type: sudo chmod +x name of boinc binary 3. Then type ./name of boinc binary follow the rest of the on-screen instructions. that should do the trick. HTH! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Gollumer at May 15, 2007 1:23:16 AM] |

No need for all that!
----------------------------------------sh boinc_5.8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.shwill do the needful. But for those that can, the Synaptic option is far better. edit: I note that your method is the one given in the official instructions - and it is, in fact, guaranteed to work in more cases than mine. But my version's easier ;-) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 15, 2007 2:09:20 AM] |

Thank you, Gollumer. I'm up and running now. Will keep your instructions re: making files executable in Linux for future reference. I try to stick with the GUI's but I find in Linux that being able to do some basics with a command line is quite useful. Your response is much appreciated. Eric

You and Gollumer are getting over my head but I'm keeping both your advice on command line entries for future reference. I'm running Boinc on my Ubuntu install now. The "universe" Synaptics package has it and once I got the right package it was easy for a GUI guy like me. Thanks again. Eric
