Who is your favorite charity

I think one of the best charities for helping both children and communities around the globe is Christian Children's Fund - www.christianchildrensfund.org

They have one of the highest ratings by the American Institute for Philanthropy - www.charitywatch.org - with about 80% of funds going directly to benefit program participants. This is a great site to check out your fav charity. They give simple letter grades to sum up performance.

CCF has a program where you can donate in the name of a loved one (past or present). It's a perfect Mother's Day gift (although maybe a little late at this point - ok, so think Father's Day).

Re: Who is your favorite charity

Perceptually, 80% going to the direct intended beneficiary is great, if it's used well. Reading that Ronald McDonald donated a fortune to the Salvation Army, and them building fancy sports palaces for it makes me shudder.

Red Cross/ Red Crescent, less than 10% goes to sufferers of catastrophes..... it's the 90% though that's needed to make and keep that organisation good and ready to respond and they do!

Only a triple bypass? Not bad. Did they use the mammary artery or veins from your leg or both?

Shriners anytime I see them I'll donate. From what I know about them (admittedly not much.) 100% of what they take in goes into children one way or another. All overhead is donated by the group.

My family has sponsered a child through them. We started about about 12 years ago.

My family has sponsered a child through them. We started about about 12 years ago.

If you want more info on Shriners - see http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/search.summary/orgid/6493.htm

They give them 3 out of 4 stars and say almost 94% goes to helping children.

I started donating to CCF a long time ago, but didn't start sponsoring until around 2000. I didn't want to commit to a monthly expense and then have to pull out after someone was already relying on me. At the time I was a consultant and never knew how long I would be on a job.

But when I inherited some money, I started a few perpetual sponsorships. You donate a lump sum and it will be used to sponsor a child in perpetuity. The only thing about the program that could be improved is that if a child gets too old for the program or their family leaves (say moves out of the project area), they automatically assign another child without consulting you. I guess that makes sense in the long run, but it would be nice if they would try to give you the option. This has happened a couple of times. Only once did I call them about it and they were very happy to make the change that I requested.

Re: Who is your favorite charity

We get letters from our sponsered child well two, one in his handwriting and another translated to tell us what he is saying. We also send letters.

As far as the shriners children hospital. I can believe they have admin overhead for the hospital but that is just one of many that the shriners do. I would be very suprised if overall it was 6% running overhead.

What do you like about the red cross?
