Problem downloading WU (Human Proteome Folding 2)

Computer is running Win2000; last night the agent was unable to send a completed WU and download another. I uninstalled the agent and reinstalled it and had the same problem.

This morning, I uninstalled/reinstalled several times and was unable to get the agent to download a WU. I finally reloaded the OS, and had the same exact problem of the agent unable to download a WU.

Any ideas?

Hello GeorgeAndSue,
My BOINC computer has been uploading and downloading without any problems. I don't have any idea of how to fix your problem, but this might be a good time for an experiment. Why not stop UD (Exit and cut the icon from your Startup directory) and install BOINC for a test. It is easy enough to re-paste the start icon from wherever you store it when you switch back to UD.
BOINC might give you an error message or some other indication of what is wrong, or it might work fine.

Lawrence,

The problem seems to be with that particular computer, as I put a larger harddrive in another computer and was able to d/l WU's.

The problem machine is able to access the internet, so I am not sure what is going on.

Time to put a thinking cap on my head! smile

Did the computer successfully complete work before this? If so, did you change anything on, in or around your computer recently?

What security software / firewall do you use?

Everything was working fine until yesterday, that is, it was completing WU, sending them, and then dowloading new WU's. The only thing that was changed is the network connections: I did have a switch with many computers connectect that then connected to the router. The switch stopped working last night, so I am temporarily using a hub until I can purchase a new switch.

Everything else on the hub is processing WU's correctly.

No security nor firewall on that computer, as it is a dedicated cruncher.

It is might be something as simple as a bad port on the hub or a bad cable connection. If you have another open port, try that and maybe another cable.

Cheers

Re: Problem downloading WU (Human Proteome Folding 2)

Hello GeorgeAndSue,
I'm running just 1 computer now because my router went. Something happened as I was about to fall asleep, but I couldn't figure out what. The next morning I had to reboot one computer, then I found that the router had also failed. So I bought a cheap router for a replacement. Well, it didn't work at all. So I will have to get another. sigh . . .

So I understand about hardware failures.

Perseverance!

FWIW, I have two near-identical W2000 machines here, one of which has over a year of runtime for WCG. I tried downloading and installing the UD agent last night on the second system, and it immediately went into a loop of trying unsuccessfully to download work, and then pausing. After over 24 hours of not collecting a WU, I exited from the UD agent, downloaded and installed BOINC, and started it up. Once supplied with the URL and login, it grabbed a WU immediately and began working.

My advice: If the UD agent isn't connecting, and there's no other known issue that you can identify, try BOINC instead. Don't forget to remove the UD agent from the Startup menu if BOINC works.

Re: Problem downloading WU (Human Proteome Folding 2)

Hi and thanks to all ; I have been so busy that I didn't reply back to this thread in a timely manner.

I gave up on the the Windows Agent and installed the BOINC agent. The computer is now crunching away.

Something about the combo of hardware, OS, and other installed software was not compatible with the Windows agent.
