Sign-out?

Registering and signing in is simple enough.
Other novices must also wonder about signing out.
The absence of a sign-out procedure should be
mentioned on the sign-in page.

Thanks, ... Peter E.

Re: Sign-out?

What do you mean? May I draw your attention to the "sign out" button in the top right?

Thanks! Yes; there it is, if I scroll to the farthest
upper right corner of the page!

Pity that Webmasters and Web page composers
have forgotten the principle of browser responsibility
for presentation of a page. A good Web page
allows the browser to fit the page to the display
available, with minimal scrolling.

Is horizontal scrolling really necessary?

Thanks and best regards, ... Peter Easthope

Re: Sign-out?

Peasthope,

I don't seem to need any horizontal scrolling. 1024x768 resolution on a 17" monitor, normal size (96dpi) fonts. Firefox 2.0.0.3 browser.

Re: Sign-out?

Fit width or height?

Typically when very long raw hyperlinks are posted, the page will go off the side (they dont wrap). The most glaring issue is, if someone started a thread with one in the top 2 lines and it being bumped to the top of the Recent Post list. Same happens if someone posts non-forum compliant large images.

One day we get new forum software and it being run on a single server, will we get better display and do we see posts appear everywhere at the same time and not like here (at my habitat) 10-15 minutes on into a discussion. Once one knows the quirks, it's workable and the high horse can be put back in the stables.

David & others,

Whereas I have a temporary display giving 640 x 480 x 24.
It shows between 1/2 and 2/3 of the width of the page.

Our two instances of display illustrate the issue well. The
page is designed for a display at least 768 pixels wide.
One of the elementary principles of Web page design is
to relax such constraints and allow the browser the
freedom to present the content in a format suited to the
output hardware. Try browsing this site with a PDA.
You will soon tire of scrolling left and right.

Yes, that is a very specific detail in this topic.

These matters are discussed extensively in http://www.w3.org/.

If the administrators want more people to participate, they
will follow good software engineering practices.

Best Regards, ... Peter Easthope

Re: Sign-out?

You are not alone in your desire. I've been asking for better W3C compliance and accessibility for a long time.

Unfortunately, WCG's focus is on running the grid. They lack the resources for a comprehensive website redesign. They will get it done eventually, but it isn't a high priority.

Yes, I've browsed the site with a PDA. I agree fully....

They have computers, and they may have other weapons of mass destruction. (Janet Reno)

Software people would never drive to the office if building engineers and automotive engineers were as cavalier about buildings and autos as the software "engineer" is about his software. (Henry Baker)

The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from. (Andrew Tannenbaum)

Standards are always out of date. That's what makes them standards. (Alan Bennett)

Considering the current sad state of our computer programs, software development is clearly still a black art, and cannot yet be called an engineering discipline. (Bill Clinton)

How would a car function if it were designed like a computer? Occasionally, executing a maneuver would cause your car to stop and fail and you would have to re-install the engine, and the airbag system would say, "Are you sure?" before going off. (Katie Hafner)

You have to ask yourself how many IT organizations, how many CIOs have on their goal sheet, or their mission statement, "Encouraging creativity and innovation in the corporation?" That's not why the IT organization was created. (Tom Austin)

If McDonalds were run like a software company, one out of every hundred Big Macs would give you food poisoning -- and the response would be, "We're sorry, here's a coupon for two more". (Mark Minasi)

That is easier said than done. With over 3000 pages in my own website, it is impossible to change each page to meet the standards-of-the-moment --- before W3C changes the standards. I have done 3 major partial iterations. The standards have become more Microsoftcentric, in spite of making my hand coded HTML pages browser independent and flexible.

Here is my own advisory clause:
This site is best viewed at 1024x768 using Internet Explorer 4.0+ (shows color extensions, hover style and rollovers), Opera (shows hover style), or Netscape 4.0+ (has CSS style limitations). Percentage widths are used wherever possible to obtain proportional results at 800x600 with page length somewhat longer, or 640x480 with scroll limitations and page lengths a lot longer. Even so, horizontal scrolls are required for my largest 3 awards as received: 1124x1188, 1200x1200 and a whopping 1754x1240 for a certificate. 8 bit 256 color browser safe resolution is sufficient but will view the light pastel backgrounds as slightly darker. 16 bit 32m color resolution is required to view all colors correctly. Comments on page appearance are welcomed from recent AOL, Omniweb, Nokia, Cello and Safari (Mac OS X), Konquest (KDE Linux), Mozilla, Internet Explorer 4 through 6, Netscape 3(!) through 7, WebTV and Lynx (text) visitors. Only small amounts of Javascript are used, mainly for spam-free encoding of e-mail addresses. Flash, frames or plug-ins are not required.

I haven't applied for webawards for a couple of years, but it remains the 9th most awarded site in the world, with 1799 web awards. "High standards" for web awards have become more flashy and gee-whizzy. With the advent of wikipedia, text repositories may be having a resurgence. I'll let you pick it up from this link:
