Att: Rick Alther - Possible Discrepancy In Reporting Stats

I have just been doing a few calculations on my statistics and there seems to be a discrepancy

Example #1: Average Points per runtime hour = 32.22084
Multiply this figure by 24 hours and it will total 773.30
However my Average Points per Calendar Day is reported as 711.38000
A difference of 61.92 points

Example #2: Average Points Per Result = 697.43137
Results Returned To Date = 51
Multiply 51 Results by 697.43127 = 35569
Which, is correct

Example #3: Points Generated To Date = 35,569
Divide that by Total Run Time to Date = 45 Days 23 Hours 54 Minutes 46 Seconds
And the result is 773.30 which is correct

Is there a reporting error in the database software that is causing this discrepancy of 61.92 points in the section, Avg. Points Per Calendar Day?
Regards

Re: Att: Rick Alther - Possible Discrepancy In Reporting Stats

It could be that at some point in your crunching, maybe even only on the very first day, you did not have 24 runtime hours in a calendar day. I bet the perceived error is in the assumption that there are exactly 24 runtime hours in a calendar day for every calendar day you have been crunching

Using your numbers, if you had
35569 points
points per calendar day = 711.38
35569/711.38 = 50 calendar days.

So, somewhere in the last 50 calendar days, you have logged an actual 46 days of run time

Your crunch up time of 45 days 23 hours 54 minutes 46 seconds (round to 46 days) over 50 calendar days gives you an efficiency rating of 92%. 92% of the time you have been signed up, your computer has been actively folding proteins.

Did you lose any time to the bad workunit problem in November? Did you start crunching at exactly 0000GMT the first day? There is also some limited amouont of non-crunch time when the agent is packing up results, submitting them, and downloading a new work unit. Also, any time the agent is not actively crunching (shutdowns, reboots, agent turned off to play a game, stuff like that) will affect the runtime hours/calendar day ratio.

Graham,

The difference that you noted in Example #1 is becuase Run Time * 24 hours is not the same thing as a Calendar Day.

Run Time is the amount of time that an agent runs. If the agent runs on a computer that is only on for 2 hours a day (and you let the agent run the entire time), then you will only get 2 hours of Run Time per day for that agent. On the member page, Run Time is the sum of the Run Time contributed by all the agents running for that member.

The number of Calendar Days is simply the number of days between today and the date you registered.

Thus your example #1 comparing Average Points per runtime hour against the Average Points per Calendar Day isn't valid becuase Run Time * 24 hours does not equal a Calendar Day.

There is an additional stat on your member page called Average Run Time per Calendar Day. This is the sum of the Run Time that all your agents have contributed to the World Community Grid divided by the number days between today and the date that you registered.

Some members who have many devices contribute much more then 24 hours of Run Time per day. For example look at:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewMemberInfo.do?userName=mkmeyers

As of Jan 4, mkmeyers is contibuting over 57 days of Run Time each Calendar day.

Thanks,
knreed

Wow... I do have a question, is it possible for you guys to post equations of all the overall score, points system, etc...? I would like to do some calculations on my own to make sure things are right here, and besides, I'm curious... biggrin
